Introduction
Adrenaline soared through my veins as I focused on putting the ball on the back of the net. In a second I was running around the field, arms in the air with my teammates behind me clutching my jersey with the intention of applauding my effort. I had won it for the lads and being the scorer made the victory even sweeter. Simply put, scoring a goal is one of my greatest fascinations. My pleasure does not purely come from hitting a winning shot. Rather, it is from the technical execution of the shot that I draw a sense of inexplicable satisfaction. From the footwork to the follow-through, each technique is a complex art that needs to be perfected in order for the shot to be carried out flawlessly. Hence, I have come to value the underlying process rather than the final achievement itself. It is no wonder why I have a special affection for dentistry because it is a process with a beautiful end.
One summer day, I witnessed my mother undergo a root canal treatment. Surprisingly, each root canal filing that the dentist performed evoked the same inexplicable satisfaction that I would gain from playing soccer. To my mother, it was just a root canal procedure, but in my eyes, I was observing an artist in the process of creating an oral masterpiece. Furthermore, each step's purpose and technical complexity blew me away as I saw the amount of detail that needed to be addressed in order to alleviate my mother's pain. As these thoughts began to connect, I became struck by a newfound desire.
Before long, my interest in dentistry grew to become my passion as I began shadowing a hospital dentist who specialized in treating medically compromised patients. One of her patients was a student who had lost half of his teeth in a car accident. It was hard not to sense the gravity of his situation as he came into the clinic sullen with despair. During the next six months, however, I saw how Dr. **** established a rapport with the student to gain his trust throughout the ordeal. Each step of the healing process, I gained a greater admiration for how much faith he would place in Dr. ****'s capabilities as she provided him with hope through affirming his recovery. By the end of his final appointment, I was overjoyed to see the student finally smiling with his new set of teeth. His happiness deeply convicted me to serve patients with challenging disadvantages as I reflected upon how rewarding it was to see his misery transformed into exuberance.
My love for dentistry led me to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology at the California State University Northridge, from where I graduated with a Cum Laude of 3.55. As such, I am in the Dean's list and Honor Roll of the university. I was also involved in research into cancer and development biology at the university where I was able to understand various aspects of cancer towards finding a lasting solution. I also worked in the American Red Cross Blood Drive as a volunteer coordinating blood drives and registering blood donors and creating a positive atmosphere for them.
Other than that, I am passionate about arts and crafts including; painting, crotching, knitting, and making paracord jewelry. I also love playing piano and doing exercises. I have already mentioned my love for athletics and particularly soccer, which I was able to pursue as a player (striker) of a local club.
Conclusion
I believe I have the right mix of skills, experience and desire to do dentistry in your school and I intend to utilize all these for not just my benefit, but that of the school and the dentistry profession in general. It will be an honor, and a pleasure to undertake a dentistry course at your school and I thank you for considering my application.
