Article Summary

The article, "health care issues for veterans" offers a guide on the process the veteran should follow as to enjoy the full benefits of the veteran affairs program. The article illustrates how eligibility for health care programs is complicated and involves various issues. Importantly, the author state that not all the veterans are eligible for health care benefits offered in the VA program and those who qualify for the program are required to contribute financially to enjoy the benefits. The program provides two types of benefits namely service connected pension benefits and no service-connected pension benefits used for the compensation of the veterans (Derro, 2016). Furthermore, the compensation process is noted to be pro-claimant of lacking a burden of proof in its adjudication.

Similarly, many veterans never receive their benefits due to other reasons such as lack of insurance and distrust of doctors among others. The article findings indicate that the flaws together with the oppressive backlog of appeals at the VA combine to create a perfect storm that affects the health of the veterans negatively. Nonetheless, it shows that the denials and delays in the claims process by the VA may cause adverse impacts to the mental and physical wellbeing of a veteran. For instance, financial implication issues are noted to be common occurrences due to repeated denials (Mall & CELA, 2013). Another effect due to the rejection of claims to the veterans is on the access to VA health care, positive self-concepts, and viewpoints of the VA.
