The reason for this increase may be attributed to a rise in price in transportation, health and personal care. First, the U.S. is a capitalist country with adequate resources to provide for its citizens compared to developing countries. The country has enough productivity and should, therefore, focus on other areas of economic development. Most people in the U.S. do not actually look for jobs, but living the American dream since productivity has enabled the country to preserve enough resources, like oil, for its citizens for upcoming time. As a result, most people are not worried about the future, for example, the current coronavirus pandemic has killed many Americans, but they do not seem to care. Higher productivity has enhanced the living standards of Americans, to an extend poor Americans can be wealthy individuals in other countries. Therefore, the author is not contradicting economic principles, but only inferring excess productivity makes individuals so comfortable they forget what hard work is.

Conclusion

Technology destroys more jobs than it creates. Also, his statement contradicts the economic theory that suggests technological information is vital for economic growth; however, job loss causes an economic downturn. In 2019, many experts inferred how in 15 years, 40% of jobs could be replaced by artificial intelligence. Economists also argue automation has eliminated millions of jobs and 20 million more could be lost by 2030 (The Wall Street Journal, 2019). Technologies have been adopted in areas like medicine, education, financial services, and manufacturing hence replacing humans, leading to worsening inequality, stagnant income, and job uncertainty in the future. These effects are not good for any country’s economy. Chatbots, cashier-less stores, and autonomous cars have all taken away jobs hence changing the way people work and live. Consequently, in agreement with Rushkoff, more jobs will be destroyed in future, even maybe resulting in a global crisis.
