Introduction
Counselling has been in the past perceived to be all about giving advice and guiding clients through their difficult times. It generally relates to emotional state and mental health of the client. Through seven years' experience in counselling I have changed lives and transformed dreams, help in fighting addiction, provided direction and given hope to many individuals who are now making a mark in their lives. In my experience, people have always been seeking counselling for their relationships, careers, addiction, and general issues in their lives. It is my great joy in providing a solution through guidance, offering strength, restoring families and bringing hope to the hopeless.
With all the problems that I have in the past solved, my passion for counselling has always been inspiring individuals to come out their addictions and stirring hope for the families involved in offering support for someone in recovery. I always consider my personal theory of counselling to be ever integrative and changes the approach. This makes me be very sound and open to different means of adopting various techniques, experiences and theories that clients can gain from a variety of ways in managing the therapy. However, I am directed by the base theory which is derived from a combination of rational emotive therapy and family system theories.
Clearly, caring, genuine concern and compassion are some of the prerequisites for efficient counselling. Yet there are also specific subsets of traits, characteristics, values, behaviours, and experiences that have provided great help as a counsellor in making me more efficient in handling my job. In my early professional years. I used to feel sorry for those who were in drug addiction and when they reported for counselling, I would as the question: How can I cure, treat or even change such an individual. However, things have changed and the question I am raising currently is how can I provide which such an individual may adopt for his own personal growth.
I have managed to help various people who are into serious addiction due to acceptance and patience which is a personal characteristic that I have found to be very essential for an effective counsellor. For efficiency, a counsellor is supposed to use his or her self-control when it comes handling various personalities and individuals who not likable and are suffering from emotional problems. This is one great element that has proved to be significant in dealing with alcohol and drug client. In most cases, such clients are always resistant and deceitful when taking part in the treatment process and at times, I can confess that self-control has played an essential role. Growing into a stronger and into a more complete person hard knocks can be a greater quality of a counsellor. According to Abdolrahimi, Ghiyasvandian, Zakerimoghadam, & Ebadi, (2017),some of the important characteristics of a counsellor is gaining the social skills, they include being present, listening skills, having empathy, paying attention to non-verbal and verbal cues. For one to provide help in the counselling field, it is important to consider the fact that effective counsellors always have a genuine interest in other individuals and what they do in general. I have always been passionate and it has always been my genuine compassion for individuals who are suffering from addiction and seeing the success of an individual and a family is always evident in my work. This is often recognized by us as unconditional positive and respect in regards to an individual who is in the process of receiving help.
I always believe in respect for the person in need of seeking a balance between recognition of limits and identifying strengths and exploring new aspects of thinking and behaviour. I plan on making use of various approaches to therapy which has foundation on this assumption of human nature. with my great experience in the addiction field, the belief that I have formed is that our existence is not fixed; however, individuals normally create a self through connection to living systems, relationship with other individuals and through experience. Additionally, I am in agreement with the some of the cognitive behaviour therapy of human nature. this includes the idea that everyone has the potential of thinking both irrationally and rationally. This is quite a dominant injustice system and in the addiction field. Notably, In working with the addicts and their families, I have observed that operating with the idea that one is capable of recognizing irrational thinking patterns and start making productive thinking patterns has created serious benefit. My experience is that people can also gain and develop greater control by building their skills sets for more convenient responses in handling situations that are stressful.
In the overall treatment process, my personality has played an important role as counsellor. Personality has to me has always been something that I observe in someone, displaying continuity or consistency for an individual to model. In my case, personality has always played part in shading light to the addict to realize the difference in themselves as well as their families considering what has changed over a period of time. Considering the nature of my work, my personality traits have always been changing through the experiences have been gaining from life. According to Abdolrahimi, Ghiyasvandian, Zakerimoghadam, & Ebadi, (2017) Erickson believed that personality involves an evolving process throughout life, from birth through maturity and finally to death, he also believed that all the live parts are equal and no part is more than the other. Through this theory, have developed a greater impact on how I view any of my client who is suffering. It always makes me view the greater picture of the one I will counsel.
I have always taken a look at the whole individual, over a range just to study how they develop, taking notes on some of the significant sections of an individual's life that may act as a benchmarker for their current behaviours. In most cases, individuals always act in reaction to another event happening.
My philosophy in regards to assessment and ability to define behaviour normally changes in the field of addiction. I always feel that people are best understood through conducting an assessment of family members, individual observation, individual observation diagnostic criteria for abuse and dependency as well as self-reporting. Incorporating such diagnostic criteria has always played a major role in developing a well-rounded approach in coming up with help.
One of the great goals that have always inspired me in counselling is coming up with strategies for reducing the negative impact of abuse, substance use, and dependence on individuals clients and their families. Playing my role as a counsellor, I want to be in a position that will help me offer treatment services which are convenient to the cultural and personal identity of the client. Countering the rising challenge will demand flexibility, adjustment and mutual understanding among those individuals are abusing drugs. for this to happen, this shift will hence offer a stronger focus on systemic interactions. This will help the family members to build a greater awareness of patterns of relationship.
In some cases, things have at times worked differently when providing help to individuals who are addicts but do believe in God. I found it very easy to deal with Christians who are going through addictions and have found themselves helpless and in bondage to drug abuse. One experience is about a young man who had a serious belief in God and was addicted to smoking cigarettes. This idea was condemning him and the more he was condemned, the more he was helpless and could smoke and more. We could talk more and more and embraced him with the love that is portrayed in the Bible; love your neighbour with all your heart. After counselling, we could pray and this was one of the best experience. It is didn't take a long period of time and he was smoking no more. This made me learned that having the knowledge of faith is greater since it makes the client start thinking that a supernatural being like God is playing a loving role in helping him or her a better person. This has made most Christians whom I have encountered to stop smoking and other addictions like watching pornography.
Conclusion
Treatment has always depended on motivational enhancement and therapeutic relationship and for an effective change to take place, the environment, different individuals and support network should play an important role in managing change.
