The narration that I will state in this paper is a brief narration about myself that pushed me to major on this particular topic of research. At a very tender age, I was an enthusiastic and devoted kid with an extroversion behavior. Thus, when I became of age, I began schooling, and I was so willing to school at that juncture. At school, I kicked off so well, and I had no trouble in perceiving concepts and faced no difficulties at all. I was doing well in the kindergarten years and the first grade and didn't have any problem in learning. However, there was a drastic change of events when I joined the second grade. The events of that day are still so vivid, Mrs. Collins called my name out to read, I panicked and became so terrified this is because I was so afraid to read aloud. I tried reading the teacher's assigned segment, but I was so scared even to utter a single word, I broke into tears, and I was ashamed of myself since I was unable to read while I was in the second grade.
When the day's lessons were over, Mrs. Collins requested that I be left behind, she asked if I was able to read, and I shamefully responded that I was not able to read. Mrs. Collins then called my mother to inform her about my retrogression. My mother was full of rage since I had proceeded to the next grade without having the capability to learn. My mother took action and begun to help me herself. She had to change her working plan so that she could tutor me. At that point, I wouldn't say I liked the idea since it hindered me from performing my activities. However, in the process, I began perceiving concepts quickly and also studied many things from her. Eventually, when I got back to school, I had esteem issues, especially when it came to reading. On resumption to school, I still had a few problems becoming a nuisance, I joked and pranked other kids in school, continually talked and laughed out so loudly. At some point, I was punished because of indiscipline. The reason for acting out was to draw the other student's attention and distract them from learning since myself I was not so good at it.
To a certain extent, I started becoming wary of my acts since all my allies and colleagues exemplary well in their classwork and the exams. In contrast, I was joking and pranking them and also distracting them from learning. I became so frightened that my close allies could proceed to the next grade while I could be left behind due to my inability to learn.
After a couple of months, I started improving gradually on learning due to the competitive learning environment that I was. I started doing extra assignments aside from the classwork. I also began engaging in additional learning activities after school to boost my learning ability. After every session, I would polish whatever I have learned at home with my mom's guidance. At the end of the academic year, my mother bespeaks Mrs. Collins to examine both oral examinations and written so that she could be convinced that I was indeed ready to proceed to the next grade. I was so glad when the results were out, and I had performed relatively well, and I was to proceed to the third grade. That experience as a young kid was bumpy and cumbersome.
The Purpose of the Study
For like some two decades later am a doctorate candidate in Education-professional leadership at the University of Houston. My mother, who helped me soldier on in this journey, could be so gratified by my achievements after all the distress I went through if she were still alive. I selected this particular topic because I am a victim who has been through all the struggles about learning. Using this platform, I would wish to create awareness as a literacy professional of efforts that people or children with such a poor learning history such as mine were then. Also, to motivate parents to have resilience and patience if they happen to have kids who are slow learners or perceive contents slowly. Even teachers who handle the kids should comprehend the different levels of learning capabilities and extremities. Identifying the potential of a child will go a long way in ensuring that they utilize their potential to the fullest. And they are hence avoiding to punish them for mistakes that they commit due to inabilities, for instance, what I used to do, joking to other kids, and distracting them during learning sessions.
I, therefore, choose this topic because I have been a victim of this throughout my life. I wish to create awareness of a social learning environment that is important in a student's success. Thus, Badura's social learning theory is a significant part of my research, hence the choice of the topic.
