HIPAA

It refers to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 provided by the United States. It provides data privacy as well as provisions for safeguarding medical information. The three major things addressed in the HIPAA law are portability, medical integrity, fraud and abuse. In the recent years, the law has emerged into greater prominence because of the proliferation of health data breaches which are as a result of cyber attacks and the ransomware attacks on the providers of health and the insurers (Garner, 2018). The main purposes of HIPAA are to ensure the provision of continuous health insurance coverage for the workers that may lose or change their jobs and also to ensure the reduction in the administrative burdens and the cost of healthcare through the standardization of the electronic transmissions of transactions. The information protected by HIPAA include the likes of the name of the patient, address, date of birth and social security number, the physical and mental health condition of an individual, the care provided to an individual and any information.

Electronic Health Records

EHR is an electronic version of the medical history of patients that the provider maintains over time. They may also include the key administrative clinical data that is relevant to the individual under care. EHR may include information about the patient in the sectors of demographics, notes about the progress, problems of the individual, medications, any vital signs and past medical history among others. The Electronic Health Records tends to automate access to information and also has the potential to streamline the workflow of the clinician (Hoerbst, & Ammenwerth, 2010). EHR is set to improve the care of the patient by ensuring the reduction of incidences of medical error through improvements of the accuracy and clarity of medical records. The system also makes information about health available, reduces the instances of test duplication and reduces delay in treatment among others.

Quality Improvement Initiatives

These initiatives focus on measuring and ensuring the improvement of the patient outcomes. The quality improvement areas of focus include the like of child quality such as screening, initiatives for oral health, maternal and health of the infant and vaccines. The adult initiatives are such as adult Medicaid quality grants, the health of their infants and tobacco cessation among others. General improvement initiatives should be in the departments of emergency rooms, the health disparities, the safety of the patients, care transitions and reduction in obesity among others (Kobernick et al. 2018). The main purpose of these initiatives is to ensure that there are improvements in healthcare through the identification of problems, the implementation and monitoring of the corrective action strategies and the study of its effectiveness.

The three topics are critical to the successful implementation because of the constant changes happening to the sector of healthcare and the need for better strategies for managing the facilities. The implementation of these strategies is often complex and challenging but it is worth the sweat in the end. The objectives of healthcare facilities are to ensure high-level patient care under their budget targets which helps to avoid the negative effects on staff turnover. To ensure that they minimize these negative outcomes, the facilities need to have strategies that prepare for change, implement the change, evaluate and sustain the change that follows. They also need to make sure that the process is effective. Policies need implementation and so are the initiatives for quality improvement and electronic health records. There is a need to evaluate the entire process before embarking on a successful implementation. It is only when the organization follows a methodical process of change that they can implement effectively.

There is a relation existing between the HIPAA law, Electronic health records and quality improvement. The HIPAA law ensures the protection of health information of the involved patients and the electronic health records ensure safekeeping of the medical history of these individuals. The electronic records are as a result of the HIPAA law that makes sure there is the protection of the information without any occurrence of errors. The aspect of quality improvement initiatives come up in the form of implementing the necessary strategies to ensure healthcare of high levels.

IT and Healthcare Setting

Information technology is the applying information processing that involves both the hardware and software of the computer in dealing with storage of information, its retrieval and sharing and in the context of healthcare, their information should concern the same (Burke, & Weill, 2012). There are several health informatics tools that include clinical guidelines, computers, formal medical terminologies and systems of communication (Jones et al. 2014). The use of IT in medical education is to ensure ready accessibility of information on medical topics and helping students to stay connected.

IT and Administration in a Collaborative Environment

IT is essential in medical facilities as it helps to ensure improvements in the quality and delivery of healthcare to the patients (Gartee, 2011). IT and administration ensure a collaborative environment that helps to increase the levels and quality of services that the facility offers inclusive of other essentials such as the safety of patients, the decrease in medical errors and also goes ahead to strengthen the interaction between patients and the providers of healthcare (Jones et al. 2014).

Policies and Human Guidelines of the Hospital

The human policies and procedures include those of the staff workers, managers and patients. The role they all play should be for the common good of all members (Vincent, & Amalberti, 2016). Humans should ensure a reduction in accidents, the staff needs to provide the necessary care to the patients and the managers should implement rational decisions, plans and also actions to achieve the healthcare goals in the society.
