Introduction

The goal of the research paper is to apply the theories and concepts in this class to understanding the processes and politics of a historically significant migration pattern. You are free to research any historical pattern that you wish (suggestions provided below). However, please keep in mind that the research paper is NOT just a description of a collection of historical records related to an immigrant or immigrant group or class. Instead, the research paper must critically analyze how historical processes and politics are involved in the migration pattern. To this end, the paper should be structured with these component parts:

• An introductory summary of the migration pattern;
• An analysis of the motivations to migrate;
• An analysis of how the world economic system structured the migration;
• An analysis of the politics or policies attempting to manage the migration;
• An analysis of the experience of concrete individuals a part of the migration pattern.

Part ONE: Research Proposal

Research Paper Proposal with a Thesis Statement consists of a 2-3 page description of:

• Your research topic--What international migration pattern are you researching? When? Which Countries? (Remember you are researching the pattern, not the issue).
• Your research question or Statement of the Problem--Why is this an important migration pattern?
• Your thesis statement--Provide a draft of your thesis statement.
• What concepts and theoretical position might you use to help explain related migration processes and politics?

An annotated bibliography of at least 5 sources that you will use to address your research question--You must annotate your sources. (Requirements for the sources below)

Part TWO: The Actual Research Paper

Format

The research paper should be 5-7 pages long, not including the cover sheet with the title, your name, and the course name.

The paper should be word-processed and double-spaced, with type size no longer than 12 point and standard 1-inch margins.

You must include in-text citation and a Works Cited page, also not included in page count.

You must use at least FIVE sources (the majority should be current-no less than 5 years old). Two of your sources MUST be from books and/or academic journals (printed or on-line). The rest of your sources may be from secondary resources and documents, web pages, newspaper articles. Make sure to include the page number for all sources, and paragraph # for any articles.

You are encouraged to include primary sources in your work. You may also included oral histories with individuals who were/are migrants.
