Introduction

Our lungs as part of the respiratory system play a vital role in keeping us alive. It is important to know what particles enter this part of our respiratory system. The knowledge of whether they are safe or harmful is very necessary so as to secure the health of the system. One of the factors that would increase the risk to the health system is the dust storms. It is a big risk to the health system specifically the lungs since it causes many complications in the lungs affecting the breathing of an individual such that to some extent it leads to adverse complications which cause the death of the affected person.

The entire world needs to have a good understanding of the dust storms, how it happens, the effects, its causes to the people as well as the control measures which can be used and applied to curb and control the problems of these dust storms (Schweitzer et al., 2018). The world health organization (WHO) recommends several ways, and it has funded research of quite a number of case studies which are aimed to reduce the occurrence of these dust storms and if they occur, the control measures which may be used by the affected people to reduce dust and particles from entering their respiratory systems causing harmful effects on these people.

The main goal here is to focus on the control measures that are recommended from the conducted case studies discussed in this case. The most important thing is to understand what dust storms are, the way they occur and then discuss the outcomes of the case studies which have been conducted in recent years about the same dust storms.

Challenge Question

Overarching question

What contributions would we need to obtain to decrease the risk of dust storms and haboobs on our respiration system health?

Specific Objective 1

The main objective of this study is to come up with measures to stabilize dust storms nearby freeways

Specific Objective 2

The other objective is reducing or preventing particle PM10 and PM2.5 from accessing our lungs

Specific Objective 3

The other objective is blocking dust storms from emerging in cities in all the ways possible

Actions That Address the Challenge

Use of Ecological Contributions to Obtain a Type of Soil That Would Stabilize Dust Storms (Case Study 1)

There are several case studies which have been conducted to identify the issues related to the dust storms. One of the case studies has been about the obtaining of ecological contributions to obtain a type of soil that will stabilize dust storms (Khojasteh et al., 2017). There are additives that would be added to the soil to make it hard for dust storms to occur. This is the especially to soils like sandy soils and clay which have loose particles, and they are prone to dust storms.

Obtain Any Type Health Tools to Protect Our Self from Dust Storms (Case Study 2)

The other case study was to obtain types of health tools to protect ourselves from dust storms. There are so many health tools which can be put in place to help deal with dust storms and reduce their impacts on people especially in environments which have soils which are prone to dust storms like in sandy areas or so (Schweitzer et al., 2018). For example, learning of the seasons when storms occur most would be best to deal with the storms and their effects. In addition, special protection gadgets like health masks to prevent dust from entering the body system would be the best way to deal with this problem during these times.

How Vegetation or the Planting Trees Belts Would Draw or Reduce Dust Storms or Sandstorms (Case Study 3)

The other case study was on how planting many trees, especially the ones that cover the ground would help to reduce dust storms (Goudie, 2014). Having vegetation cover will help to reduce the strength of wind which is the main causal factor of the dust storms in most regions.

Discussion and Conclusions

From the three case studies above, some of the discussions and conclusions that would be of help to the issue of dust storms to help deal with and eradicate the problem which was obtained from the case studies would be as follows;

How Does the First Case Study Answer Objective 1?

The type of soil in a certain environment really matters in determining whether the area will be affected by dust storms or not. There are areas with light soils which have very loose particles making them prone to dust storms (Khojasteh et al., 2017). The case study obtained the results that there are chemical additives and other organic matters that would be added to such soils to make the particles hold close to each other thus lower the degree of susceptibility to dust storms. An example area where this would be applied is an area with sandy and clay soils.

How Does the Second Case Study Answer Objective 2?

There is a need to come up with measures that will ensure that no particles will enter the lungs in the event of dust storms. Use of masks recommended by health professionals who have filters that prevent soil particles from entering the respiratory system is a vital solution to the problem (Khojasteh et al., 2017). The masks worn by people during times of storms need to have three layers of filters to filter the soil particles so that no single percentage of PM2.5 particles access the lungs and cause breathing problems.

How Does the Third Case Study Answer Objective 3?

Trees play a vital role in the control of strong winds which are the main causes of the dust storms thus it is important to have many trees planted in areas that have had many cases of the storms (Goudie, 2014). This vegetation includes grass cover which protects the soil from being lifted easily by the wind as the tall trees break the wind and lower its strength immensely.

Resolutions

Employing all the above measures will ensure that the dust storms are controlled in the most effective ways. They will change the patterns of the storms, and thus this will be a lasting solution to the dust problems which has over a long time resulted to health problems due to complications caused in the lungs by the dust particles that enter.
