In a family of five, I was considered as the black sheep of the family. Nobody believed that I could ever achieve anything meaningful in my life as opposed to my other siblings who were very successful. My mom always scolded me for any little mistake that I made. My siblings made fun of me and laughed at me most of the times. This made me hate family gatherings with a passion. Unfortunately, family gatherings were a routine for my family every summer holidays. I hated this practice because it made me hate myself for not achieving anything meaningful in life. My school grades were poor and I conducted myself like someone who had given up in life. My little brother always reminded me of how stupid I was and told that I was stupid enough not to even do simple arithmetic. These sentiments broke my heart. However, I was determined to prove everyone wrong. Deep inside I knew I had a passion for something great.
I remember vividly the point I made a decision to change everything about my miserable life. It was during one of the routine family gatherings. As usual, everyone had everything beautiful to talk about except me. My mom never made an effort to encourage me to try to do anything different from getting good grades because that is what my family believed in. for my family, attaining good grades was the way to determine a person's success. I was nowhere close to achieving that and everybody believed that I was a failure for life. However, that one evening, I surprised everyone. I did something that no one believed. Nobody saw it coming. It was like I was hitting back on each and everyone for all the time they undermined my potential. I had a burning desire to prove everyone wrong. As my siblings talked by their school experience and their academic achievements, I was sitting in silence and nobody ever asked about mine. Then in a flash of a moment, I stood up charging at my mom who never seemed to care about me. "Mama, why can't you look at me and see something different from attaining these stupid grades?" I said. "Can't you people give someone a chance to try something different? We are not born equal. Why do you refuse to see this? I can do something else. I have other potentials. But you simply choose to see this in me. I am tired of you being mean to me. " as I said these words, I was crying and everyone sat in silence.
For a moment I felt stupid. Everyone was looking at me in awe. I did not know whether I should walk away or remain still and wait for their reaction. I was trembling and something inside me told me to stand still. I knew that I had only that one moment to change everything about my life. so I kept pressing on and I was charging even more. "Can someone please tell me if I am not a member of this family? Does it mean that if I do not have the potential to attain good grades I should be treated as an outcast? Honestly, I am tired of feeling stupid. I am tired of trying to prove all you wrong. I am tired of trying to show you that I can do something different. But you just refuse to see me trying. "At that moment, I realized that my mother was crying. This made feel good just a little bit. I was struggling to afford a smile amidst tears and anger. She was touched. Everyone was touched. I realized that I had touched their hearts. So I stood there in silence and doubt waiting for their response.
Conclusion
It was during that emotional moment that I realized that I had made a huge step in changing my life. For a moment I stood up for myself without anyone making fun of me. I could see the empathy in my mother's eyes amidst her tears. My little brother who was always quick to object everything I said was sitting in silence like he was trying to hide from something great than him. For once, they did not look down on me. My mother did the most honorable thing in my life for once. She got up, slowly walked up to me and gave a tight hug. Then she said, "my child I am so sorry for everything we have put you through. I have been mean to you and I am sorry. From today on I am going to support you and whatever you choose to do, as long as it brings happiness to you, I will support it." At that moment, I was felt relieved. I did not expect that. It was an awkward moment but I was happy and I could not thank my mother enough. At long last, I knew I had her support to pursue my dream of becoming a model.
