Introduction

Statistical data today play a significant role in nursing practice by promoting evidence-based practice by understanding nursing research such as interventions influence a study group (Giuliano & Polanowicz, 2008). Univariate statistics refer to a single variable in data in which the data being studied has a single attribute whereas the bivariate data has two characteristics and can be used to assess nursing research that requires the observation of two variables such as comparing between two interventions (Denis, 2015). This paper will evaluate the difference between univariate and bivariate data and the statistical types impact on nursing practice.

The Importance of Understanding Univariate and Bivariate Statistics

In nursing practice, evidence-based practice has become a fundamental requirement to improve care outcomes by relying on research. Understanding research and its application require the nurses to be aware of the principles and significance of different sets of data in both univariate and bivariate statistics. In univariate statistics, each data set is explored separately which can be used to display the frequency of the variables differently. In nursing, when the effectivity of different nursing methods is required using the univariate statistical method nurses can be able to establish the unique features and effectivity of each intervention differently (Denis, 2015). On the other hand, bivariate statistics in nursing helps to compare between two variables which can establish the association between a hypothesis on a nursing method and the causality or the outcomes. Besides, the bivariate statistics can be used to determine the significance of the correlation between a nursing intervention and the outcome of the intervention and those that have high correlation significance are preferred and used in an evidence-based nursing intervention (Arppe, 2007).

Conclusion

Both univariate and the bivariate statistics are very important in making evidence-based nursing decision making. The univariate statistics helps to assess two different variables concurrently whereas the bivariate statistics further expands the application of statistics such as intervention methods by making it possible to evaluate the correlation between the nursing method and the outcome. Therefore, nurses by understanding univariate and bivariate data can be able to make better clinical decisions based on nursing research.
