A college nursing curriculum is meant to prepare students to be able to work while they are licensed as registered nurses or licensed practical nurses. The educational programs may vary from one college to the other depending on the policies of a given institution (Keating, 2014). However, what is common is that the nursing curriculum carries similar coursework in all the institutions. This article will look at all the aspects that are involved in the curriculum of nursing at a college level.
In the US, nurses are typically celebrated as a result of having their week of nursing. Nursing students are known to have a day that is recognized nationally. This goes to mean that nursing as a profession is something that is taken in high regard, for this purpose, the curriculum should be well designed to meet the needs of students as this report will show (Oermann, 2017). The nursing curriculum examines some concepts like; medical ethics, human development, Physiology and anatomy, health observation and assessment among other thoughts. The paper will critically look at all the aspects that should be put in place to make an innovative nursing curriculum for college students.
Organising strategies for a curriculum design
Organising approach for curriculum design in nursing will generally have four central basic concepts which can also be termed as an organizing framework. The organizing strategies ideas are; Health, Nursing, environment, and human beings. These four concepts are the basis for a nursing curriculum in college. The theory of systems is the one that is used for the examining of a mutual process between the environment and human beings. Within the concept of human beings, the main guiding principles are holism, development, and growth within the lifespan. Holism is made up of social, cultural, spiritual and even intellectual dimensions. The environment is said to be the landscape or concept and the geography of the social experiences and relations of humans.
Health which is a dynamic process is the synthesis of illness and wellness and is described in the category of clients within the lifespan of people. What can be seen in health is the concept of stress and the ability to cope when there is wellness or illness within a client. Nursing concepts can be described as the process that connects a nurse to other people (Keating, 2014). The central concepts, in this case, is caring. Within the college level, critical thinking is highly considered within the whole curriculum. Critical thinking, in this case, is made up of; decision making, research process, nursing process, and clinical process.
College Nursing curriculum is purely based on the factor of Humanism by a concept of Based Learning. This conceptual model is meant to make learners get the best that they can from a nursing curriculum. The idea provides learners with instructions and motivations for learning by giving connections that are meaningful to a learner. Through this curriculum, it will be easy for learners to get involved in the knowledge that has respect and dialogue within themselves. The learner will get engaged in useful learning, psychomotor and cognitive learning too. Journaling that is reflective will make learners to show their feelings and have a self-evaluation concerning learning within activities that are well structured within an entire curriculum.
Through this innovative nursing curriculum design, a learner will be able to have a mastery of some concepts within the framework which are; health, nursing, and human to know the whole curriculum well. The domains of health, human and nursing will give a conceptual framework that will guide learners in getting the nursing curriculum (Oermann, 2017). Concepts within this curriculum design have been organized within the domains and learning is meant to take place up to a level that is of complex care. The conceptual framework will have examples of clinical matters indicating importance in the nursing practice. Within this curriculum design framework, students will be able to put information in a logical manner that will help in their thinking.
Curriculum Parameters in Nursing
An effective curriculum should have parameters that serve the needs of students; currently and in the future. In this regard, the curriculum design for nursing at the college level will be able to have outcomes that are of high level to the learners. This implies that the curriculum will be able to offer essential skills. They should be of a standard scale that can be able to serve the person in future and at the same time will not have impediments that are unnecessary to a learner. This means that as learners are starting in this nursing curriculum, they should be able to gain skills that pertain to cognitive, psychological and social skills that will enable them to be at best in their game.
This curriculum will not have a room that can make students be categorized as winners or losers or even pass or fail that can prepare students to regret why they got into the program (Grealish, 2015). The curriculum will be able to measure the level of students as per what they can perform within standards that are allowed. This curriculum will be able to develop nurses that are competent and those without negligence of any kind.
The delivery approach for this nursing curriculum in college will be concept based. With a concept-based delivery approach, it will be easy to make students get the desired material that is needed for the job market, and at the same time, it shall be easy equipping them with skills that are collaborative and at the same time those that are endowed with critical thinking. These are skills that will help the nursing students to take care of patients as it should be. A concept-based delivery approach will be able to take charge of big ideas and teach students on how they can be able to categorize and organize information. The content that is passed to students will be one that will be able to concentrate on facts as a concept will focus on bringing a sense of the facts that surround the students.
A concept-based delivery approach will be helpful as it will make students to think critically of the subjects that they are learning together with the situations that they experience as they will be able to put some experience and knowledge (Grealish, 2015). The nursing leaders should be able to know the merits of concept-based delivery approach to understanding the nature of all the students making them have the right information to develop some critical thinking aspects. A concept-based delivery approach will equip students with patent information that regards to patient care.
