Work experience refers to the skills that a person gains during the period he is working in a particular institution. It enables a person to be able to acquire new skills and also be able to relate to people as well.
My class influenced my experience in the job place. Ones class is measured by the educational background of ones parents and if one is from a wealthy family or not. I was from a middle-class background, and my parents were also educated and working. I went to school but didnt manage to reach the university level because my parents could not afford the university fee at that time but I managed to attend a college where the payment was manageable and did a course that was related to education. It affected my job experience and also led to me being paid a relatively small amount of money as my wage. Despite I doing the tiring jobs particularly in the Badminton Centre where I acted as the receptionist their salary was relatively low, this is because I had no experience as a receptionist and had neither done any courses which were related to as being a receptionist. The fact that I was from the middle class helped to shape my work experience this is because I was able to learn from my fellow colleagues who had managed to do a University course related to receptionist since they were from a wealthy background. I learned new skills and how to deal with various types of clients. The fact that I had attended a learning institution and also my parents were not so badly well off made it easy for me to help the customers to book their court and also solve their problems quickly. Most of the time while at home we used a formal language hence this assisted in shaping my work experience since it became easier for me to communicate with most customers quickly and frequently (Damaske, 2011)
My gender also played a great role in the shaping of my professional experience. I being a lady acted as a significant advantage. It was mostly in my second job where I served as a waiter. Most hotels consider ladies to be the best waiters. It helped me improve my interpersonal communication and relations through communicating with the customers. It improved my work experience in that I gained persuasion skills in the process. I had to persuade the clients who came to the hotel and give them rational reasons as to why they were supposed to eat out food and that our prices were relatively fair despite some of them bargaining for the price to be reduced. It helped in shaping my work experience as a teacher. I learned how to be patient with kids who take a long time to understand what you are teaching them and also know that not all kids are from the same background and hence learned ways of equalizing them and making them feel appreciated. My gender helped me to be in a position to take care of the kids. It is because as a lady I had been a position to observe what my mother was doing to my younger siblings and also taught me how to take care of them while she was away now that I was the only lady in our family. It helped in a great way in the shaping of my work experience.
My race has also played a great role in the shaping of my professional experience. In the three places that I got the chance to work, I dealt with people who were from different races this helped be to be able to understand other people's culture hence being able to respect other peoples beliefs and cultures. It improved my experience of dealing with individuals who are not from my culture. Also at the school, I dealt with kids who were from different families and were from different races hence I was able to make them learn to love each other and not discriminate each other according to their color.
Increased Globalization has affected the workplace. It has led to increased cultural diversity in the workplace. Due to the increased globalization, people from different cultures were employed since there were customers as well who were from different cultures. It made it a challenge for me while at the workplace to communicate and also at times to understand what was being described mainly in the case when one spoke using his native language.
Globalization also affected the wages that I was being paid at the workplace. It is because most of them especially the badminton one since they can outsource employees from outside countries since it is now possible with the high rate of globalization. These outside countries tend to offer their services at relatively low prices as compared to countries which are highly developed. It has created a high-profit margin for the companies, but in turn, the workers get a reduced wage pay.
Globalization led to us being trained more at the workplace. It is because new technological means of communication were introduced and hence we had to be trained so as to be able to use the new technology. The increase in diversity of culture, religion, as well as ethnicity, resulted in the training of the employees in the workplace. It was meant to protect the company and also enhance teamwork and create a better relationship between the employees with their management. It helped the employees not to discriminate each other. Globalization helped me to appreciate people who were from other cultures and race (World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization & International Labour Organization, 2004).
Globalization led to the hotel company and the Badminton Centre to increase our safety and improve the working condition. We were given protective gears which we used while performing different tasks in the workplace. At the Badminton Centre since I also used to collect garbage I was given gloves and gumboots which I used to wear to protect myself from harm. At the hotel where I worked as a waiter in the evening, we used to clean the floor. The manager gave us gumboots as well and used mobs instead of dusters to do the cleaning. It had been influenced by globalization as the managers were able to copy what other companies and hotels were doing who were in developed countries so as to maintain their employees.
In conclusion, these factors have significantly contributed in the molding of my work experience since I have been able to learn different skills, interact with people from different cultures and religions. I believe the experience will place me at a greater advantage of other individuals in the marketplace since I have been diversified and will enable me to pursue my career as a teacher effectively and be a good teacher to my students since I will be able to make them understand better through using my example.
