Introduction
My dream job is to become a public relations manager. A public relations manager is a professional in an organization whose work is to ensure continuous improvement of the company's image and enhance its continued excellence. Public relations manager uses various forms of media and communication to manage, maintain, and build the reputation of a company or clients. They are, therefore, key personnel in businesses, public bodies or agencies as well as other voluntary organizations. Hotels, banks, colleges, and Universities are some examples of organizations where public relations managers can be employed. As a media and communication professional in an organization, a public relations manager communicates very crucial messages to the target audiences with an aim to develop and maintain the understanding and goodwill between the employer organization and the public (Jugenheimer et al. 2015). In addition to that, a public relations manager monitors the publicity and conducts thorough research to understand the expectations and concerns of the stakeholders of an organization to report and advise the management on the best possible ways to use their reputation to their advantage.
Roles and Responsibilities of a Public Relations Manager
The roles and responsibilities of a public relations manager may vary from one organization to another depending on the industry or sector of the organization. However, the following are the general responsibilities of a public relations manager. According to Lee et al. (2015), public relations managers are mandated to develop, plan and execute the public relations strategies to enhance the proper and desirable reputation for the company. They are the media professionals in an organization whose role is to communicate with the key spokespersons and other colleagues in an organization. They liaise with and answer questions from the media, other organizations or individual stakeholders concerning the company either through emails or telephone. Apart from that, a public relations manager research, writes, and distributes the press releases to the company's target media and collate and analyze the media coverage. They prepare and oversee the production of publicity handouts, promotional videos, films, multimedia programs, photographs, and direct mail leaflets. They organize various events that are advantageous to the company such as open days, exhibitions, press tours, and press conferences to enhance the reputation of the company. They also update and maintain the current information on the company's website. In many organizations, the public relations manager is responsible for documenting and editing in-house articles, speeches, annual reports, case studies, and magazines. Apart from that, they are also responsible for updating and managing the company's information on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. For example, in five-star hotels, a public relations manager is responsible for engaging with the hotel's customers on social media platforms to ensure that the reputation of the hotel is upheld through managing views and opinions of customers concerning the hotel. By doing this, the public relations manager is in a good position to intervene in the situations when a customer expresses negative opinions concerning the hotel which might destroy its reputation and discourage the prospective customers from visiting the hotel. In addition to that, public relations manager is responsible for promoting a favorable relationship with the community through such interactive events as open days or involvement in various community initiatives to benefit the people of the community while improving the company's image in the eyes of the community members.
Qualifications for Becoming a Public Relations Managera
To become a public relations manager, one needs to attain a minimum of bachelor's degree in public relations or any other related fields such as communications, journalism, marketing, fundraising, or English. Some companies, however, require that one must have a minimum of a master's degree to be considered into the position. Apart from earning the degree in the above fields, candidates may also be expected to have acquired a particular duration of work experience in the related field as a qualification for the position of the public relations manager. Individuals may start their career as a fundraiser, or a public relations specialist before climbing up to becoming the public relations manager (Lee et al. 2015).
