Introduction

Nursing as a profession involves taking care of the families, communities, and individuals so they may maintain, attain or recuperate quality of life and optimal health. Nurses are unique in their contribution to their approaches to patient care, the scope of the practice and the training methods. Nurses take part in many different specialties with diverse levels of prescription authority. Most of the nursing professionals provide care under the directions given by the physicians. The above traditional approach to the treatment method has shaped the public image of all the nurses as care providers (Balas et al., 2012). Nevertheless, nurses are always permitted in accordance with many jurisdictions to practice independently in different medical settings. Nursing education has undergone diversifications towards specialized and advanced credentials. Most of the traditional provider roles and regulations of nurses are changing. In my nursing career, I have been involved in influencing lives of other people.

In my career, I have contributed towards advancing positive social change through undertaking various nursing roles in service to the community. My dream has always been to give back to the community and to ensure that the patients are given an effective medical care in different healthcare facilities. Nursing is one of the professions that ensure direct engagement with the community members. Nurses often interact with a variety of patients from different social setups and as a result, they have the capability of enhancing positive social change. Working in care homes has always proved difficult for most of the nurses prefer other roles other than taking care of the elderly. Taking care of the nurses has been perceived negatively by different professionals in nursing. When I was beginning my career, I saw the need to change the negative perception of the nurses towards taking care of the elderly. When I was working in the nursing homes, I used to assist patients in bathing, grooming, oral hygiene, feeding, and elimination. I managed to influence the fellow nurses to also see the needs of taking care of the patients with such demands or conditions. Additionally, I helped patients in moving in and out of the bed, baths, ambulation, wheelchair and feeding processes.

In the nursing profession, social innovation often links the problems-solving capability with the building of alliances, relationships, and creativity that translate thoughts into actions. During my participation in National Student Nurses Association, I found the opportunity to share my dreams with other nursing professionals with the aim of ensuring positive change in the community. During my association with other members of the group, I managed to use my nursing skills to activate new potentials for members of the communities to thrive while involving the needs and the voices of many. Additionally, I took part in crafting the blueprint for advancing the positive nursing practices in the society at large. The blueprint was also meant to enhance equitable future when it comes to medical delivery. The above association was deeply rooted in the persistence and continuous building of relationships in various communities to ensure collaboration when it comes off the nursing practices. With my skills in the nursing profession, I managed to anchor these movements and with the presence of many nurses in the formulation of the above blueprint, each of the nurses identified the part to play in upending injustices.

Nursing is a profession that requires mentoring and deep engagement with the patients and the community at large (Wright & Leahey, 2012). Being a community nurse means creating positive change by being a mentor to those who are willing to become nursing professionals. Additionally, deep engagement with the sick as well as the elderly people enables them to develop a positive attitude towards the medical practices that are meant to assist the entire communities of the society. When working with Chi Eta Phi Sorority organization, I managed to mentor numerous people by encouraging positive practices and behaviors towards the nursing profession. Mentoring is often impactful and it is capable of helping the society in achieving the common good and practices in the health sector. The positive social relationship is essential for every community as it enhances the common good of the people not only in the medical service delivery but also in creating talents and potential professionals. Positive social change often leads to the improvement in social and human conditions, as well as the betterment of the society. These changes usually take place at various different levels including families, organizations, individuals, and governments (Wright & Leahey, 2012).

Conclusion

The positive social change is normally driven by actions and ideas which have real-world implications. The main roles of nurses in the nursing profession are to influence the lives of others in the society. However, the above case has not been forthcoming due to the negative perception of nurses in various sections of healthcare. In working for various healthcare organizations, I have attempted to influence the lives different people by encouraging others to fully become committed to their profession and by undertaking roles that many people consider to irrelevant yet essential in the healthcare system.
