Movies as Tools for Influencing the Perceptions of Society

From the insights obtained in this class, one can rightfully posit that movies and cinemas are perhaps one of the most influential forms of art due to their fusion of action, message, and sound. Studies indicate that at least 35 percent of the world's population spends its leisure time watching movies. This percentage is high compared to other forms of media that are used as leisure. People's daily lives are intertwined with screen time, and the film remains one of the most influential mediums for influencing perception. These insights are relevant to the study of the film Triumph of the Will. This film was created in 1935 as part of a propaganda machine for the German Nazi (Lewis, 2019). Hitler must have understood how impactful images can be towards building perception and belief on a subject. In the film, his objective was to have the German people believe in the great power that Germany was. He used massive troops and speeches from leading Nazi officials. The film captured footage of about 70,000 people in a rally addressed by the leaders. Truly, the film can be used to sway the perception of the general public either subtly, or forcefully as was the case in this movie.

Videos Expand Individual's Knowledge of History and Cultures

The insight gained from this class lead to the agreement that the film expands people's knowledge of history and cultures. This aspect is achieved in one way. Besides providing narration, films also recreate scenes together with aesthetics and details that are believable. These insights are perhaps relevant for understanding the Academy Award-winning movie for best picture in 2001, Gladiator. The storyline of this film is a marriage between love and revenge (Shapira, 2017). The aesthetics, lighting, and dress depict a past life, hence putting the event in the past that is believable, despite the actors living in the present. Watching gladiator clarifies the understanding of the role of film in expanding one's knowledge of history and cultures in a way that a book or narration would not. From this film, one visualizes the Roman culture as it walks one down the memory lane. The class is right in noting that film places events to their context so that one does not just have to visualize the events based on settings they are conversant with. The film introduces some of the aspects of a culture or history that the audience is not already aware of, and influences how much information they have about the culture.

Film as Commercial Tools

This class introduces the understanding of the commercial role of film in modern economies. Films can be used in many ways to realize a commercial gain. Films and cinema are already commercialized and the rise of streaming technology is an effort to maximize the monetization aspect of the film. Films are also used to create models, celebrities that influence the economic choices that the public makes. Most importantly, films perform the role of advertisement. Besides cinemas using advertisements before and after movies, there are either subtle advertising cues or full-blown advertising campaigns performed by the film. These insights come out clearly in Dave Franco and Emma Roberts' roles in the film Nerves. This film uses two celebrities to position Apple products (Slocombe, 2019). Besides the direct advertisement of company products as depicted in this movie, it is equally noteworthy that movie theatre contributes to close to 80 percent of the sale of snacks. Film production is also a costly undertaking that consumes hundreds of millions of dollars each year, while the film industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. This class, therefore, rightly posits that film plays a great economic role. Films either influence consumption trends or directly contribute to the economy through taxes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the insights obtained from this class are indeed evident in various films and movies. Movies influence the perceptions of viewers and can be used for positive or negative gains. Negative gains were evident in films produced during wartime by individuals such as Hitler. The power of film can be harnessed to create perceptions that can either mislead or empower societies. The second role that film plays is to introduce viewers to cultures and insights about a culture that they may not be conversant with. From the third film, it is true that films play an important role in the economy. They influence consumer trends. They also subtly or openly promote products and services.
