Introduction

One of the most significant questions that the chapter intends to examine is the scale of modern child slavery. While examining this question, the chapter analyzes how different organizations are already running programs to assist children facing exploitations to adopt several questionable tactics. While running such programs, the organizations approximate the number of children facing different forms of endangerment. Such organizations still identify the number of young children working under different harsh conditions, especially those that are below the minimum working age. Such organizations term the process of exploiting a child that is under age as slavery. Even more questionable, such organizations describe the inability of a child to attend school on the basis that they are working as slavery (Campbell, Miers & Miller, 2011). Such kind of treatment is identified as abuse for human rights that may result in irreparable damage on the children. The organizations tend to raise the alarm concerning child abduction where children are taken from the streets and exploited either economically or sexually.

Another significant question that the chapter intends to examine is the commercial exploitation of children. The chapter focuses more on such exploitation by considering the exploitation of children working on nonfamily farms. Most of the young children taken away from their homes to work in a completely new place have little knowledge concerning their background or even where they are supposed to run to in case things get tough. Their running away may entail escaping the ill-treatments or for any other reason (Campbell, Miers & Miller, 2011). Sometimes it may be a challenge to differentiate between the child's normal dependency and different incidences of manipulation. Once the media misrepresents such incidences, then there will be minimum political intervention hence reducing the interest of various organizations in intervening to help such children.

Most Important Evidence Addressing the Questions Being Asked in the Piece

Evidence provided to address the questions asked in the piece offers a better definition of a child based on international law as anyone under the age of eighteen years. The evidence shows that anyone in that age group is supposed to have a reduced capacity for assessing risks. Although the ability of children to take care of themselves increases as they grow, it is important for the governments to consider the flexibility of different policies since children aged sixteen are considered adults in different cultures (Campbell, Miers & Miller, 2011). In other cultures, children as old as nineteen years experience different vulnerabilities that can be considered as childlike hence require societal protection.

Another piece of evidence provided in the chapter to address the questions is the existence of sexual exploitation on the children. The chapter narrates how such incidences have continued to witness an upsurge over the past years due to the global expansion of the sex industry. An example of such incidences is during the 1980s when foreign men when to Thailand to look for young girls whom they can engage in the sexual activities with (Campbell, Miers & Miller, 2011). Today, different organizations run programs to minimize the incidences of engaging boys and girls under the age of eighteen from prostitution. In 2000, there was an adoption of an “Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography” as part of minimizing incidences of prostitution.
