Introduction
The millennial students represent the vast and most diverse generation to ever attend college. Unlike their predecessors that attend ended college 10 or 20 years ago, they possess unique thought processes, educational tendencies, coupled with collective personalities that differ from traditional classroom practices and educational environments (Monaco &Martin 42). The main characteristics that the millennial generation portrays underlie the absence of professional boundaries influenced by socialization, desires for instant feedbacks, unrealistic expectations, lack of critical thinking, coupled with a sense of entitlements. Additionally, they have higher levels of parental involvement, a guide to their success in and out of classrooms, and the desire to succeed with minimal efforts and less time. With the increasing prerequisite of education as an economic opportunity in the labor market, the recent generation is, therefore, more likely to seek higher education and advanced degrees than the previous generations.
Characteristics of Recent Generation Students
They are special owing to their strong bonds with their parents, who play vital roles in modeling and advising them as they attend college. The awards they receive in participation in both curriculum and co-curriculum activities, coupled with the encouragement that they are all winners by participation, make them feel unique as compared to their predecessors. Similarly, they are sheltered as their growing safety is a higher priority, making them expect rules and regulations along with their enforcements. They are given some little bit of freedom and a parent-driven schedule lifestyle that enhances their decision machining sills. They are also team-oriented and are uncomfortable working alone.
Similarly, they also depict aspects of confidence and optimistic with big dreams and expectations stemming from easy high school attainment of success coupled with their abilities to multitask in various technologies. They have all the information at their disposal, all thanks to the internet, PDAs, and other telecommunication forms that they have 24 hours of total access. That, coupled with their nomadic nature accelerated by cellphones and laptops combined with their technological stimulation, thought their childhood to their matriculation through college further boosts their confidence. Similarly, they are always pressured to perform, making them thrive and yearn for constant feedback(Monaco &Martin 43). They also have strong desires to achieve as they have been instilled with words of encouragement that they are destined for great things. Finally, they are conventional, meaning that they have much respect for the differences in culture and accepted a broad spectrum of cultures. As opposed to the generation X who were considered rebels, the generation Y are considered peacekeepers.
Why College Students of Recent Generations are More Productive than Previous Generations
The college students of recent generations may not have a reputation for hard-working since its caricature is more or less technically oriented. That is, however, debated as a new survey by Project Time Off, and GfK depicts that the millennials are work martyrs than older workers(Carmichael). That is courtesy of the longitudinal studies between the Y generation and generation X as the former perceive themselves more meaningful and unique as compared to the latter as students. Similarly, today's young adults are supported by inadequate safety nets as compared to their parents' generation that hence, it no longer reflects the realities faced by young Americans.
Today's young adults are better educated than the previous generations with a steady climb of bachelor's degrees and higher since 1996(Bialik &Fry). Millennials have a higher value for college education, and most plan on getting one as compared to the previous generation. The current generation has become very savvy about their choices of knowledge, and unlike the last generation who viewed education as a rite of passage and their future investment, the millenniums consider training as an unnecessary expense unless it is leading them to an outcome that they seek to attain. Surprisingly, the new generation may choose not to go to school until they find a valid reason for the program, and how they can culturally fit within the institution, a significant shift from their predecessors. And albeit labeled lazy, the generation Y are motived to work on things that are of interest to them, and they see no value in doing things unless it is of importance to them.
As opposed to the previous generations, the current generation is considered digital natives since they grow up with the internet, tablets, and smartphones, and they can easily access information as it is readily available for them. That is unlike the previous generations that could not easily access information. The readily available data for the recent generation makes learning easier hence more productivity as they incorporate technology in their learning environment (Carmichael). Additionally, they can attend online classes through the use of their computers and tablets as part of their formative learning, copied with the use of apps in their phones to complete tasks. Additionally, the millenniums have created a team to work collaboratively across space and time to exchange ideas as an enhancement of teamwork and collaboration. That enhances productivity and share of knowledge across all diversities as compared to the previous generations that learning was the only classroom centered and individual innovation acquired. Most employers in the workforce seek for teamwork in their organizations, an attribute exemplified by the recent generation, thus making them more productive than the previous generation.
Moreover, the millennium's generations in college are more concerned about their carriers and financial securities versus the past years' students who depicted elements of social and humanitarian issues. The current generation college students have become well rounded by the provision of specific curriculums and curricular opportunities like volunteer work, leadership education, and interracial experiences. That is unlike the past generation college students that were resistant to changes and never challenged the system hence monotony of productivity as compared to the diversity and flexibility of the current college generation students. The richness of college students of recent generation students has been more advanced owing to their optimum levels, higher education levels among many, minimal tolerance for power and authority, independence, and low levels of allegiance to the organizations(Monaco & Martin). Also, unlike the previous college student X generation, the baby boomer generation thrives on self-help, personal gratifications, adherence to teamwork to increase diversity in knowledge and output coupled with the demands for work that is challenging and satisfying.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, generation Y's better productivity than the X generation is also informed by their personalities, which entail a willingness to go extra miles, positivity, optimistic,self-driven, need to have it all, desire to work and idealistic. The X generation college students, on the other hand, were less productive as they were self-absorbed attention seekers, critical of everything, adaptive and pragmatic. That enables them to impact the connected world and promotion of community involvement, coupled with their dynamic websites that enhance innovation.
