Dear Mayor Hindi,
I am writing to you regarding the legislation addressing the housing issue in the state of California. This issue is of paramount interest to me as I have recently taken some anthropology classes and I have learned that in as much as food and water are the essential commodities, how and where people live also has a significant impact on their daily lives and how the cope socially, mentally and psychologically. In addition to that, the issue also affects my relatives directly as some of them are struggling day in and day out to pay rent and even sometimes to deny themselves food to save for rent.
I am primarily concerned with the increasing number of homeless people in the state. Every day on the streets there is a new family that joins the street families, only because they cannot be able to afford their rent. As a result, there are significant sections of the street where thousands of people take shelter every night. Furthermore, the homeless people shelters have been overcrowded with many of them lacking sufficient provisions to sustain the people living in those homes. Just the other day, we got to visit these families with our class, and the situation in these places is inhumane. The families have no access to clean water, they have absolutely no system of hygiene put in place, and all their waste is cluttered up in the area where they sleep and eat. After a short interview with the families living on the street, I found out that most of them end up getting sick due to the extreme condition of living on the streets.
My primary concern is that if no action is taken towards the issue of high rates of housing, then many more families are going to find themselves on the streets. This will result in a chain reaction whereby the streets will be converted into homes, with makeshift shelters, and the houses will be left to the rich only. However, this situation can be rectified by introducing a bill that requires every house owner to subsidize their housing rates, this, in turn, will ensure that almost every person can afford decent housing without the pressure of paying prohibitive rents. In addition to that, there should be a mixed-community standard of living, where the homeowners understand the different types of social groups that exist and ensure that at least every person is catered for without discrimination.
Even though I have reviewed reports on your stand on the housing crisis in the state of California in the newspapers and also watched a few of your interviews addressing the same issue, I realize that this may not adequately represent your viewpoint. Hence, I will look forward to your reply voicing your sentiments, and your present stance on the issue.
Thank you for your deliberation of my opinions on this matter. I have confidence that it is a vital issue and would like to see the issue discussed and contained.
Sincerely,
