Introduction
Technological developments have changed almost all aspects of life for a man. Human beings continue to make these advancements as time goes. One of the most significant progress is the use of a computer. With the increasing use of computers, programming has become an important skill to possess. According to Steve jobs, "everybody in this country should learn to program a computer because it teaches you how to think." In his article, "Why Basic Coding Should Be a Mandatory Class in Junior High," Bajarin argues about why coding should be introduced to children at a younger age. First, Bajarin identifies the goal of the education system is to help with problem-solving and critical thinking. Also, colleges prepare individuals to be responsible and successful and assist in the development of the country. Bajarin further tells of how some teachers made him like a particular subject at an early age; hence, students need to know how to interact with technology. Introduction to coding at a young age should be emphasized since the students are not likely to forget. Also, Rushkoff, the author of "Program or be Programmed," suggests that computer coding should be treated like arithmetic and or the alphabet in schools (8). Therefore, I agree that coding should be taught at Truman College since it has many benefits. The essay will explore the importance of coding to the students to show why it should be a requirement at Truman College.
First, coding can help Truman College students gain a greater understanding of how technological devices work, to explore what they can do beyond their basic functionalities. According to Barajin, "a coding class would help them gain a greater understanding of how technology is designed and how software serves as the medium for triggering all of the devices' capabilities" (8). Many of Truman College students mainly use the primary components of technological devices such as phones and laptops. Some of them only use phones for calling, texting, taking pictures, and nothing more. However, hardware and software developers have added many features in their products that would be useful. When Truman students learn to code, they can use features that were not being used before. The students will get much more from the technological advancements by learning to code. Features that were not used before may positively affect the students making their lives better. The ability to use most of the functionalities of the digital devices may prove helpful later in the students' lives.
Also, coding can help Truman College students develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The students will know that there are different ways to deal with a problem from coding. However, they will learn to use the most logical solution to any challenge they face. Also, the process of coding is filled with several problems, such as bugs. The students may sometimes fail while developing codes. However, the students learn that they do not have to give up and bounce back from the failure to create their systems. While debugging their codes, students may increase their knowledge regarding their code. Coding helps the students to keep trying on different aspects of their lives when they are faced with challenges. Coding should, therefore, be a requirement in the Truman College, to ensure students are determined and logical problem solvers.
Moreover, computer programming offers many opportunities in the future. Many organizations have adopted the use of computer codes, more so those in the technological sector. Also, technology is used in almost all aspects of human life. According to Bajarin, "We live in a digital age in which technology plays a role in what we do every day. We use technology at the office, school, and at home" (8). Therefore, everything in the modern world runs on technology. Programming knowledge will help the students interact with the various technological devices available. Some students without necessary programming skills may have a hard time in the future, interacting with several types of technological devices. These students may lose opportunities to better their lives or fail to relate to a specific group of people due to the lack of coding skills. The Truman College should ensure all of its students learn to code to avoid being disadvantaged in the future.
Furthermore, coding can foster creativity for Truman College students. Through always challenging the brain when coding, the students become creative. Coding is like an exercise session for the brain. When the mind is exercised continuously, it strengthens, and the student becomes creative. The Truman College student can design programs that are entirely their own. However, creativity is majorly part of the coding process. Students doing coding are encouraged to be original and come up with the most efficient solutions for a given problem. Also, when writing codes, the student will keep encountering new challenges, and they have to use their brains to derive the solutions. The coding process not only requires creativity but also encourages it among students. Creative students may develop programs that be helpful to people. Also, creative students can deal with challenges in life because they find ways of overcoming different hurdles. Creativity can also serve the students well in their careers later in life.
Coding can help Truman College students to be ready to pursue coding-related and technology careers such as software development and engineering. Also, there are more employment opportunities in the future for students with programming knowledge. Be it in the finance sector, technology sector, health, retail, and other sectors, there will be opportunities for people with programming skills. Truman College should, therefore, make coding mandatory for all the students to improve their chances of having successful careers. Also, these careers pay well, and the students will have opportunities to earn high wages. Different companies compete to hire the best coders in the industry, to have a competitive advantage over the other firms. Coding will open many various career opportunities for the students.
Moreover, the United States does not have enough skilled coders. Teaching the Truman College students about coding will ensure they fill the available gap. Employees who can code are sought out in any industry currently. Also, since there are few well-skilled coders, their services are highly rewarded. Rushkoff suggests that the country relies heavily on coders from countries such as China, India, and other countries to meet the high demand for programming skills (8). Also, computer science-related industries have been increasing. Without proper programming skills, people will not be able to work in these industries. Besides, it has been predicted that jobs will become more computer science-related in the future. Since the primary purpose of schools is to help the students prepare for their careers, Truman College should ensure that coding is a requirement in the school. In that way, the college will provide skilled laborers fitted to work in the growing market, and the country will not have to rely on coders from other countries. Truman College students should be introduced to coding early to ensure they are experts when they leave school.
Also, Truman College should make coding a requirement for all the students because it is fun. Although it is educational, coding is also fun for many people. There are several reasons why people practice coding, enjoyment purposes being one of the reasons. Also, many coders suggest that coding is fun and the best way to spend time. Coding allows the students to challenge their brains while having fun at the same time. Since t is enjoyable, students will gain excellent skills in coding. Besides, coding can make the whole learning process more effective since students take delight in learning. Coding should be a requirement to ensure Truman College students receive pleasure through education. The learning process at the college will be more effective.
Conclusion
Coding should be a requirement at Truman College because it has several benefits to the students. Coding enables the students to get the most out of their technological devices. Also, students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The students also become creative in various ways. Besides, modern technology has been adopted in all aspects of life, hence the need for programming skills. Coding opens many career opportunities for Truman College students since there is a higher demand for coders. When applying for jobs, people with coding skills are highly preferred. Also, the coding process is fun and can significantly improve the learning process. Therefore, coding has many benefits for students.
