Introduction
Nursing is a profession that requires total commitment and dedication in service to others. Just like other careers in the medical field, it is a calling, implying that those working in the profession have to be devoted and enthusiastic in the best manner possible. As a result, it is fundamental that various set objectives are established with an aim of offering the best form of specialized care to patients. In order for this to be attained, the King`s conceptual theory was devised with an aim of assisting nurses to excel in their careers by fulfilling their duties to patients. Since the establishment of this theory in 1923, it has managed to shape the relationship between the nurses and patients, and also offered the necessary knowledge regarding the best means of ensuring that the ailing individuals end up regaining their health within the shortest time possible. The viability of the theory further extends to the best means via which patient goals can be accomplished. Other elements such as those regarding to how the theory can be applied to a potential quality improvement initiative, how a committee aligns outcomes and also additional nursing theory pertaining to the subject will be covered in the course of this analysis.
King`s Systems
Personal
This is a fundamental system which assists nurses in goal attainment. One of the examples of the system is perception, which is a means via which data is organization and interpreted then later on transformed (Gil Wayne, 2014). Self, another component, entails a method comprising of ideas as well as commitments. In addition to this, the system also involves growth and development whereby persons move from the achievement to actualization in the course of their lives. Also, body image is another fundamental element which entails the manner in which a person perceives their body and the reaction on appearance (Gil Wayne, 2014). Another element is space which is a physical area. Time another component in this system, pertains to the duration existent between various events.
Interpersonal
One of the elements of this system is interaction. This is a component which involves observing the behaviors between more than 2 individuals (Gil Wayne, 2014). It also encompasses communication, both verbal and non-verbal. This is also a scenario whereby information is transferred from one person to another via direct or indirect means. The third element is transaction, which involves a scenario where individuals communicate with their environment with an aim of attaining valued goods (Gil Wayne, 2014). Role is also another critical function in this kind of communication which entails a combination of attitudes and behaviors that define a person in the context of a social system. It also pertains the relationship between people whose interaction is based on an ideal environment. In this case for example, the role of the nurse can be defined in terms of interacting with others by identifying the goal and using their professionalism to ensure it is attained. The final component is stress which involves a dynamic situation whereby individuals interact with the environment. It is a situation where exchange of information and energy between the environment and an individual occurs.
Social Systems
The involvement of groups in order to come up with a definite mechanism is what this system is concerned with. There are a number of concepts that guide the performance of the method as will be elaborated in this section. One of the instances relates to organization which is majorly concerned with the human entities with defined roles and also those who use resources to accomplish goals (Gil Wayne, 2014). Another significant component is authority which pertains to active transaction via which values are validated. Power, on the other hand, is specifically concerned with mobilization of resources to accomplish set goals. Status is also another important element in this aspect which pertains to the position occupied by a person in relation to other people in the organization (Gil Wayne, 2014). In addition to this, decision making is also involved whereby perceived alternatives for achieving a specific goal are analyzed.
How the systems influence Goal attainment
It is important for the three systems to be linked together in order for the nurses to accomplish their desired goals. Interpersonal systems emerged as some of the most viable components for used in the development of the theory (Gil Wayne, 2014). Attainment of the set goal is mainly based on the idea whereby interpersonal systems involving individuals are aligned together to assist in the maintenance physical wellbeing, which ascertains the functioning of the roles chosen.
Clinical Quality Problem
The reliability of King`s theory in solving a quality problem is undeniably effective. Take for instance, a situation where breakdown in communication ensues. This may occur in a situation whereby trust issues emerge between the patient and nurse. Communication being one of the components of King`s theory can be utilized in enhancing this form of interaction. The essence of great communication skills in healthcare facilities especially in the emergency rooms is a significant factor that cannot be undermined. Besides this also assists the nurses in managing their tasks effectively. Most case scenarios often perceive an effective nurse as one who is always busy tending to the needs of patients (King, 1992).
Another way through which King`s theory is effective in defining a quality problem is by enabling a nurse to determine when the patient is willing to interact. Breakdown in communication may end up being detrimental in regards to accomplishing the set objectives. The theory, therefore, becomes fundamental in detecting disruption of interaction and also developing solutions which are capable of amending such situations.
Quality improvement
The application of King`s theory has managed to assisted me in managing my clinical duties as a nurse in many ways. For instance, it has assisted in assessment of patients. This occurs whereby a new patient appears at the health facility seeking guidance on specific issues. Application of the theory has been effective in assisting me come up with viable means of establishing ways of assisting such individuals. It has also aided in the coming up of diagnosis in regards to the disease a patient may be suffering from by enabling me to establish a way that would make the patient feel at ease to elaborate on what is affecting them.
King`s theory has been essential in helping me come up with an effective plan to use in managing certain situations. Also since I began utilizing this theory, I have been successful in easing the tension that previously existed between me and the patients I was dealing with; a factor that has further made my work more enjoyable. Besides, the means advocated for in the theory whereby a patient needs to be asked questions in moderation has proved to be effective, since it is now easier for me to offer the best form of care available to my patients.
Quality Committee
The alignment of outcomes by a quality committee can be made possible through the utilization of King`s theory. For example, it becomes possible to single-out the people bearing mutual interests (Leigh Ann, 2001). Also, the most effective communication method to be used in the process of interaction can easily be obtained. This may further include issues such as stress factors and roles of individuals. This theory can also be utilized in determining the powers which each of the individuals possesses. It will also be effective in coming up with specific goals that the committee ought to attain both in the short-term and long-run.
Similar Theory
Orem`s Self-care deficit is the most appropriate theory which can easily be aligned with King`s model. The similarity between the two is based on the aspect where both involve three systems of goal attainment (Leigh Ann, 2001). Further still, both theories work on enhancing interactions, however, in a situation where King`s theory works on improving communication between nurses and patients, Orem`s focuses on the identification of deficits borne by individuals and then comes up with effective measures of enabling them to acquire quality health. King`s and Orem`s theory can also be utilized in the attainment of quality health practice in any hospital setting. There is, hence no doubt that the two are important in ascertaining goal attainment.
