Introduction
Study of sociology is thrilling. However, the study of social inequality and social mobility affected my way of thinking to a great extent. Environmental influence families have on a person's personality is the primary cause of social inequality. For instance, people born and raised in families with high economic status access social rights efficiently as objected to those born and raised in families of low economic status. Besides, those people will tend to behave differently as per the beliefs their families uphold. However, their reactions towards a variety of occasions can be changed out of co-existence between the two groups. For instance, depending on religious beliefs, some families may support diversity concerning sexual orientation while others may not but due to social interactions and coexistence changes are affected. In this case, gay and bisexual people experience a sense of belonging as opposed to a society where they get criticized and treated as an outcast. In the latter, they feel compelled to move to other communities where there is minimal discrimination. They also feel ashamed of their identity.
Moreover, in a society where racism is practiced, black people feel less unfortunate within that community, and as a result, they feel the urge to measure up to the whites. They try to acquire better jobs and venture into better careers and more profitable businesses. In other cases, if they experience too much pressure, they relocate to different geographical locations where the community is more accommodating hence evading discrimination. This topic propelled me to enact ways that would reduce factors contributing to social inequality thus lowering social mobility. Each member of a society has a right to existing amenities. He also deserves to feel comfortable regardless of his economic status.
How Sociology Enables One Understand Themselves
Sociology refers to the scientific study of people - how they interact with each other and other aspects in the society. The study's basis is on political, economic and religious issues of the community. It enables people to understand their environment better, monitors the changes taking place and how to cope with them. It also allows them to follow their nature more concerning their talents and capabilities. Sociology also sheds more light on the social nature of man, the role of social relations in his life and finally the role of institutions in the development of the people's personalities.
It involves interaction among different people who possess different personalities. As a result, people understand themselves. For instance, during social interactions, people take part in games, other activities or even movements. As a result, they discover their interest and talents which they build on and finally use them as a means of improving their economic status. Moreover, social mobility as a result of social inequality propels people to move to other locations, change careers or workplaces. During such changes, people transform regarding culture, politics and also socially due to the impact of their new surrounding conditions and prevailing traditions.
While schooling, I have interacted with a variety of people who have helped me discover a lot of things I never knew about myself. Joining clubs related to those interests is helping me grow tremendously talent wise. Without the study of sociology, it would have been quite difficult for me to point such aspects about my life.
How sociology helps One Interpret the Social World
Before sociology, human relations were not a base for any scientific study. Sociology is paramount in planning the development of the society and finding solutions to problems prevailing within a community. As a result of varying economic, political and religious status of people there arise social classes within a community. The existence of this status difference brings about social inequality. This refers to the uneven acquisition of resources favoring some people based on; power, age, gender, religion, race, political party, class, ethnicity, kinship and sexual orientation within a community or a state. In this case, people associated with a particular social class acquire rights such as; better healthcare, freedom of speech, participation in politics, education and more sources of income.
On the other hand, those having a lower social status hardly get access to those rights. As a result, they feel compelled to change their social status by acquiring better jobs and shifting to better residential places. They try as much as they can to copy the traits associated with the higher social class. This shifting from one social status to another is referred to as social mobility. It involves moving from one place to another or shifting from one career to another. It is as a result of what most people experience during their day to day social interactions. Some get unfair treatment due to their jobs, races, sexual orientation and a result they move to places where they would hardly get such a treatment or places where people understand them more. Where they barely get criticized or isolated for being different.
Sociology also involves the study of characters and their dwelling places, how institutions affect the development of an individual. This makes it possible for people to tell the kind of impact a particular environment would have on them. It could be positive or negative. The difference in the context within which people dwell most say home, work, school or church is the sole cause of diversity regarding culture and social status. In addition, cultures and traditions prevailing in different states enable sociologists to explain their behavior and reactions towards a variety of issues. This forms the basis of studying and explaining the traits of people within specific regions in the world. It enables sociologists -come up with worldwide methodologies of improving social interactions and solving issues affecting people in different societies.
