Introduction of holiday lessons in class has a number of advantages but if not well handled, it could end up in disadvantages as well. We shall look at some of the best ways to incorporate holiday studies without affecting the learning progress of other students in the classroom setting of this diverse world.
Diversity is considered to be the main thing of consideration when developing holiday lesson in studies. People have to be sensitive to the traditions of those who choose to celebrate certain holidays as well as those who choose not to celebrate them. Every lesson has to concur with the anti-bias education goals (Sparks & Edwards 2010).
First, we have to recognize the relevance of the holiday. Then we devise a process where everyone's beliefs and traditions are respected. Finally, we have to provide a platform for all stakeholders involved to give their comments about the holiday. At the same time, the tactic of involving parents is crucial (Sparks & Edward 2010). It works for students who are not willing to participate in already established school holidays.
Immigrants have posed a new type of problem in this process. There has been a need to have them celebrate their own holidays in an attempt to appreciate their background and educate their peers about their culture. It is through such events that people are told about stereotypes and how to respect other people. Use of traditional songs has become an efficient method of incorporating them into the classroom setting. In this programme, the immigrants are given an opportunity to sing songs in their language for a specified amount of time.
Another point of concern is the expenses that come with these celebrations. Families with low income are the most affected (Sparks & Edwards 2010). Children are highly affected by the gifts given during these celebrations. However, holiday celebration activities should emphasize on more meaningful things than the material things. It should be a time to talk together, open up and know each other during such celebrations. One method of ensuring that happens would be making small gifts for each other, be it friends or family. Some of the most common holidays celebrated today are Christmas, birthdays and other holidays dictated by a specific school. Other celebrations may involve social activities such as helping the poor in society and celebrating social struggle.
Anti-bias Curriculum Goals
There are 4 main Anti-bias curriculum goals
Goal 1: Each child will demonstrate self-awareness, confidence, family pride, and positive social identities.
Goal 2: Each child will express comfort and joy with human diversity; accurate language for human differences; and deep, caring human connections.
Goal 3: Each child will increasingly recognize unfairness, have the language to describe unfairness, and understand that unfairness hurts.
Goal 4: Each child will demonstrate empowerment and the skills to act, with others or alone, against prejudice and/or discriminatory actions.
