The rehabilitative frame of reference for occupational therapy has bee chosen because of its wholesome approach of considering both cognitive and physical improvement of the patient to gain compensatory skills for physical disability.

Purpose: This group is designed to help older adults dealing with long-term disability conditions. This group will delve into the many ways that older adults dealing with a long-term disability can be emotionally and physically be assisted to be able to reintegrate back to the society and their families. It will look into how they can use their remaining physical abilities to be able to accomplish as much of the activities of daily living.

Group membership and size: The group is comprised of four members who are currently enrolled in long-term rehabilitation for the old physically disabled and will not admit any other member. Inclusion criteria: older adults who have suffered the physical disability as a result of unintentional injuries who would benefit from a group model occupational therapy to learn emotional and compensatory skills to be able to integrate back into society. Exclusion criteria: older adults who express violent tendencies and are in an unstable mental when the group is formed.in additional patients who were unable to ensure and maintain proper communication were excluded.

Group Goals and rationale:

  • Express feelings about own physical disability
  • Show that you understand your condition and also remaining abilities
  • Deliberate self-awareness of remaining abilities
  • Recognize positive-self talk for improving self-esteem to help deal with emotional and cognitive issues arising from physical disability and improve on physical abilities.

The rationale of this group is to gain an in-depth understanding of the power of remaining abilities and employ them in activities of daily living to the fullest.

Method: guidance will be used to accord actions and impart strategic know-how to the group. Media to be used include well-thought-out deliberations, audio, illustrations and audiovisual clips.

Time and place of meeting: The group will meet on Wednesdays from 3:00-3:45 pm, for six consecutive weeks, in room 13 of the rehab center. The sitting will comprise of 5 chairs one for a rehab attendant and a group leader will be chosen. No entry or exit will be permitted after commence of the meeting unless necessary.

Items and Supplies and cost: Summation of all the supplies and materials that will be integral to making the group sessions a success.

  • Crayons and markers (donated by rehab center)
  • computer with Internet access (available in the rehab center)

Session Title: "recognizing our physical disabilities that require remedies."

Format:

Introduction - "Hi! For everyone, for the next six weeks, we will be meeting every Wednesday as a group to learn the various ways in which we can cope with our physical conditions and be able to engage in activities of daily living as independently as possible.

Warm up - (for 4 minutes). "For a warm, up activity, I want you to listen to this audiovisual story about an amputee war veteran. ".allow the video to run pausing mid-way to ask questions. The story is of a double amputee war veteran who regained his mobility after getting prosthetic limbs.

Purpose - The purpose of this group, to encourage self-awareness and acceptance of physical conditions and discuss ways in which to better live with our conditions.

Activity - ask each person to pick a card from the table. Each with a feeling written on it and if they're not able to let the rehab assistant help assign each person a card of their own choice.

Sharing- Ask for a volunteer to share their pick and give the reasons for why they feel that way. Take turns sharing feelings and reason for each pick by a member of the group. Sharing is optional for each in the group.

Processing- Questions for discussion:

  • Did you choose a feeling different from any other member of the group?
  • How do you cope with your physical situation?

Generalizing- what have you learned from the physical conditions of other members and has it helped to make you understand that you can cope with your situations and live better.

Application

  • When can you employ a compensatory strategy to your disability?
  • How can you employ the hints in your own body to know when you might need to use a compensatory strategy?

Summary

The group leader should discuss the various challenges that they have as a result of their physical disabilities and how they feel about being disabled. The leader will also explain to the members how the meeting can help provide remedies that can better improve their lives in the case of activities of daily living and ask if any member has an additional contribution to make before thanking everyone for their participation.

Introduction- because this is the first session there will be no reviews of the previous session.For a warm-up, the patients will watch and listen to the YouTube video. Then they will be asked to describe how they feel about their physical conditions on a paper, say it loud or pick a card with emotion from the many placed on the table.

Questions for discussion: how do you feel about your condition? How do you think other people think about your condition? Do you care about how you are treated by other people?

Session Title: Pick a Compensatory strategy

Format: Review of last week-2 minutes, warm up- 4 minutes, introduce group lab- 4 minutes, directions for activity- 2 minutes, activity- 18 minutes, Sharing- 3 minutes, Discussion- 10 minutes (process, generalize, application), Summary- 2 minutes

Supplies: writing materials and charts with compensatory mechanisms for the old physically disabled.

Description (includes discussion questions as applicable): Review previous week's activity. For a warm-up, the patients will be asked to write down or say what they do to help themselves when they are faced with an activity that their physical disability impairs them to perform. After which they will look at the problem-solving wheel to identify any solutions to their problem.

Questions for discussion: have you ever used any of the solutions mentioned today? How do you feel about using these coping remedies? Would you share them with the group for any member who might need them? Make it clear to the group that a compensatory mechanism is specific to every individual and that they must find one that alleviates their disability.

Warm-up activity-ask the patients to pair up and ask them to think of a past situation in which they needed to accomplish a task but were impaired due to their physical condition. They should share the situation and how it could be solved with a partner who will provide other solutions to the situation.

Questions for discussions: How did you feel by being able to use a compensatory mechanism? Have you learned new tools and machines that can assist you/? How do you feel about using these machines and tools?

Review last week's session. The leader will explain that we are going to watch a video on improving abilities through positive thinking the patients will then be asked to identify negative feelings that hinder them from accomplishing tasks that they would want to and are capable of doing.

Discussion questions: how positive thinking can help them engage in physical activities and help them achieve tasks that they are already capable of doing?
