Introduction
Gamification is one of the trending e-learning platforms in education; it has contributed to an increase in the use of I.T. resources for learning purposes. Gamification is defined as an educational framework that is used to engage and motivate learners to participate and interact in a learning activity. It is the process of generating a set of learning content that works much like a game (Zhao, 2019, p38). It makes learning fun and exciting activity for learners to expand their knowledge and skills. Various tools can be used to implement gamification; Quizziz is one of the powerful tools for learners at all levels of education. Several researchers have studied about gamification in learning and found that it is important and efficient for learning; it positively influences learners (Pitoyo, 2019, p 457). Gamification was created to solve a problem of lack of motivation and engagement in learning for senior students. Traditional approaches did not provide adequate motivation and engagement. Gamification, therefore, remains one of the best learning platforms that can be promoted for senior English students (Basuki and Hidayati, 2019, p15). Quizziz is a gamification tool that allows teachers to generate multi-player quizzes that work on many devices; he or she can access student’s assessments and assign additional work. This paper, therefore, reports about the Quizziz tool and describes different methods that can be used with it as well as how Quizziz supports critical thinking and learning.
How Quizziz Can Engage and Promote Active Learning for a Group of Senior English Students
Quizziz can help teachers to motivate and engage learners by incorporating instruction, evaluation, and review functionalities to support senior English students to learn to different aspects of the subject. It free and simple to use; hence all learners can access the platform and participate (Li et al., 2018, p 13). A teacher can provide students with a specific access code, and each quiz can be posted online as a competition or run offline homework. Teachers can reinforce content and achieve a particular learning strategy for all students.
Through Quizziz, students can utilize IT resources to succeed in learning. The modern pedagogical approach and emerging trends create excellent methods of learning English. Learning vocabulary and other disciplines of English can be assisted in mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) that is incorporated with Quizzes (Priyanti, Santosa, and Dewi, 2019, p 72). MALL is advantageous in reading comprehension.
Quizziz interface provides a variety of features to help students interact and patriciate in the course of leaning. The platform has two major modes that are online (play live) and homework mode; the teacher can, therefore, post different quizzes for a group of learners in a randomized manner. This platform has an additional advantage as a teacher, and students or groups of students can interact through live conversation, making it easy for a teacher to help students understand a particular topic or solve a problem altogether. Gamifying English lessons help students to change their attitude towards the subject and since they would feel motivated and engaged in a game-like learning approach (Welbers et al.,2019, p 98). The teacher can assign a group of student’s tasks to work on as homework and set a deadline.
Teaching Methods to Use With Quizziz and Its Relation to Learning Theory
Quizziz provides a range of techniques that can be used to carry out teaching and learning programs. Several methods can be integrated into quizzes to improve learning in higher education. Here are some of the methods that can be used:
Tests
A teacher can provide tests for individual or a group of students, tests are known as one of the most significant teaching and learning method, it can best be integrated with Quizziz to boost learning experiences and assessment of student performance. The teacher can use online resources to guide students in answering the tests and doing research to meet particular test requirements. Quizziz provides an interactive interface for individual students and groups of students to engage throughout the examination. The teacher can use this method to encourage active participation since it involves a fun-like learning experience (Ju and Adam, 2018, p 196). Since this platform provides multi-player abilities, the teacher can post questions to be solved by a group of students. Quizzes and examinations can help ion assessing students and assigning grades. Quizziz is significantly helpful for teachers because it is built with features that carry out the learning assessment of many students within a short period.
Collaborative Learning
Collaborative teaching and learning are the best performing learning methods that help students actively participate in a learning activity. It helps to encourage group learning and teamwork where students can solve problems altogether without consulting secondary resources. Collaborative learning can best be integrated with quizzes as a learning strategy. A teacher can post collaborative quizzes to encourage students to study harder to help others. Cognitive learning theories suggest that students can develop better cognitive skills and knowledge through collaborative learning techniques (Göksün and Gürsoy, 2019, p 16). Therefore using this method with Quizziz can assists learners in improving their performance.
Reflection on How Can Quizziz Support Critical Thinking
A game involves steps of problems to solve, and in the process, a player can develop critical thinking. Through Quizziz, learning has been made a game-like experience where a teacher can create a gamified quiz either to be solved online or offline as homework. The pedagogical value of this application helps to emphasize instructional merits for teachers and students. Quizziz provides features for student assessment; hence they can analyze the level of critical thinking for individual students through the assessment methods (Rahayu and Purnawarman, 2019, p 15). Quizzes provide students with an opportunity to assess what they have learned, interact with colloquies, and grade their performance.
Critical thinking is the core factor to improve in any teaching and learning technique, therefore, through quizzing conditions and tests that contain complex questions to solve can assist students in developing better cognitive functions and improving their critical thinking capabilities. A teacher can provide factual and multiple-choice assignments and essays that need high odder thinking to solve besides the competitive learning approach that Quizziz support is important in developing critical thinking.
Integrating Quizziz into a Group Task to Achieve Critical Thinking
The pedagogical merit of Quizziz is achieved through teacher-to learner transfer of knowledge (Rahman, Ahmad, and Hashim, 2018, p 41). Various settings can be integrated with Quizziz using particular tasks to achieve critical thinking. In a group of students, a teacher can give require quizzes to a group of students on a daily or weekly basis. Frequent use of quizzes will act as part of teaching and learning activity to help students put in practice what they have learned, thus supporting critical thinking. Practical repetition of different aspects of learning serves to drive in specific facts about a particular topic and help individual students to identify their weaknesses through collaborative work.
It is important to conduct quizzing through a collaborative platform and utilize higher-stakes assignments and standardized tests through final exams. Since the platform involves fun-like experience, students with weak learning capabilities would want to continue trying their best to contribute to the group, thus improving their critical thinking and skills in solving complex tasks. The activity must maintain an interesting experience and use different types of questions to hold their interest over time. Different types of questions my include life skills and other aspects of learning that help to promote critical thinking; this is effective to assists students in applying their skills and knowledge in various situations. Group learning is more beneficial in promoting critical thinking because the quizzes must be handled in a discussion manner, thus promoting student-student knowledge transfer.
Measuring the Impact of the Introduction of the Activity
To measure the impact of the activity, that is, using frequent collaborative and complex quizzes to help students improve critical thinking. A teacher can utilize assessment features provided by Quizziz to analyses the performance of each group and individual student to measure the level of their critical thinking. Quizzes are an essential factor in measuring the impact of this activity. An educator can use pre-test and post-test design to measure the level of the impact through essay tests or multiple-choice quizzes (Zhao, 2019, p 40). Students are like to increase their level of learning and critical thinking when they handle quizzes of high order thinking.
Conclusion
Quizziz is one of the best tools of gamification that educators should consider using to promote teaching and learning techniques in the modern world. The approach has many features that support different aspects and disciplines of learning. Quizziz provides a range of options to incorporate with various methods of learning at all levels of education. Through tests and cooperative learning that involves game-based learning activities makes it is easy to achieve teaching and learning strategies for senior students. When students learn in a virtualized group with game-based activities, they can develop intellectual and emotional support to allow them to use their skills and knowledge to accomplish a common goal.
