Introduction
According to Kaakinen, Coehlo, Steele, and Robinson (2018), one of the nursing interventions that family care nurses can use to promote the health of a family is the family empowerment and family strength-based nursing care. One of the main points of this strategy is that empowering a family as a unit and encouraging its members to work together in attaining and maintaining family health helps to confer families with relevant competencies to deal with their challenges (Kaakinen et al., 2018). Furthermore, according to Kaakinen et al. (2018), this family health promotion strategy entails involving the family in taking action, planning, and setting goals regarding the health of its members. Furthermore, according to Gotlieb (2014), the strength-based nursing (SBN) is a family health promotion approach whereby a nurse emphasizes on a family's strengths or the activities that families and patients engage in to help them deal with various problems. Also, SBN promotes family health by empowering the family and patients to take more control over their health care decisions, lives, or health and bolstering their capacities to heal (Gotlieb, 2014).
An example of a family which might benefit from the family empowerment and family strength-based nursing care strategy is one in which one member is suffering from a mental illness which makes them a danger to others within the family. In such a family, the mentally disturbed member is a danger to other members of the family and hence has to be isolated from the rest. However, his condition is a great health concern for the family not only because of the disruptions he causes but also due to the efforts and resources that the family uses to ensure his recovery. Therefore, the family needs to develop this health promotion practice because it will help them develop a useful collaborative partnership between me as a nurse and the family in coming up with a common means of helping their mentally ill member.
Conclusion
Hence, to help this family with health promotion activities, I would go about intervening with this family by providing relevant strategies, encouragement, and health information that will enable the family to make lifestyle changes. I would also help the family set goals and plan the appropriate actions to take to help with the recovery of the member with mental health problems. Further, I would use recommendation to empower the family since, as Kaakinen et al. (2018) observe, commending a family concerning its strengths, resources, and competencies is an enduring, effective, and therapeutic intervention. It enables the family to perceive the family problem in a positive manner and look for more effective solutions. Additionally, I would go about this intervention by mobilizing or enhancing the family's problem-solving strengths and urging family members to value oneness, unity, and togetherness in dealing with this mental health problem.
