Discussion

Section 1

Intersectionality is the inter-connected temperament of social categories, which include race, gender, and societal class. When classified according to the named categories, individuals become victims of discrimination due to an overlapping system that has been put in place by intersection. The intersection theory is considered to be the source of overlapping co-dependent systems of inequity. The theory affirms that people are often discriminated against or disadvantaged because of factors such as the color of their skin, their gender, as well as, sexual orientation to mention a few (Coaston, 2019).

Section 2

The world is full of people from different cultures, sexualities, races, religions, and more. This means that it is essential for everyone to have the ability to empathize with others and their struggles. Understanding the concept of intersection is a significant step towards understanding the prejudice and oppression that takes place in different places. Once we are aware of these injustices, it will be effortless to expose them through the internet or the media. (YW Boston, 2017). Once people are aware and speaking up about intersection, it is very easy to push for political action towards the matter. Some countries such as Kenya have laws that require 1/3 of the members of parliament to be female.

Section 3

The theory of intersection was seen in the United States when US representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district, Ilhan Omar, was elected. She was the first female, Muslim, immigrant to have ever been elected in the US house. Her intersectionality brought out different reactions in the nation. At some point, she claimed that President Trump is scared of her intersectionality. Through the internet we have been exposed to many cases where people are exposed to certain injustices because of their race, gender and more. Police are very likely to suspect a black person in the United States compared to a white person (Chaney, C., & Robertson, R. 2013).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the intersection theory enables individuals to understand the levels of prejudice and discrimination that are faced by individuals concerning their race, gender, and sexual orientation, with the inclusion of an analysis of the examples of how levels of discrimination have occurred.
