Nevertheless, the term crime primarily denotes an unlawful action that is punishable by a permanent state or a legal authority. More so, in the modern epoch criminal law, the word crime is lacking a specific and globally accepted singular definition even though the need to use the word has seen several statutory meanings of the word formed. However, the most prime viewpoint is the verity that crime is a category created by law. In other words, any action or deed is regarded to be a crime if the applicable and relevant law declares it as a criminal act. Also, a criminal offense may be a detrimental act not only to yourself but the society, community, and state as well.

Additionally, the government or state has the ultimate authority to sternly confine or limit the liberty of an individual for engaging in any criminal act. Contemporary societies have well-established systems and mechanisms that define apropos procedures to adhere when carrying out the investigations as well as the trial. An offender who is found to be guilty is sentenced to a form of reparation depending on the magnitude of the crime. For instance, an individual may be granted a community sentence where the criminal offence is relatively minor whereas the criminal offence is serious; a person may be imprisoned for several years, be imprisoned for life or even executed depending on the laws of a country.

Besides, it is pivotal to note that there are specific guidelines and requirements that an act must meet to be classified or considered as a crime. Necessarily, for the act to be classified as a crime, it must be accompanied by the intent to harm or injure (Aplin, 2019). There is fundamentality in understanding this scenario since there are situations where people harm or injure others in self-defense. Even though every criminal offence culminates into the violation of the law, not the entirety of law violation is a crime. For instances, the breach of privacy laws in the corporal world such as breaches of contracts and torts do not necessarily call for state punishment, but settlement or enforcement are attainable through civil procedure.

Crime in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom describes the crime as acts which are both violent and non-violent happening within its borders. The police system and the courts of law in the UK are classified into three factions centered on varying judicial systems of Scotland, England, and Wales as well as Northern Ireland. In England and wales, criminal responsibility is divided between the Ministry of Justice and the Home Office. The Ministry of Justice is responsible for running the system of justice that includes the courts and prisons.

On the other hand, the Home Office is chiefly a governmental department tasked with crime prevention and reduction. The Home Office works for hand in hand with law enforcement agencies in its goal of crime prevention and mitigation. In Scotland, however, crime prevention and reduction is the responsibility of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Services. This Scottish body is essentially the sole public prosecutor and hence charged with the mandate for criminal prosecution in Scotland.
