Introduction

Over the recent years, there has been a massive population flight of individuals leading to internal displacements and refugees seeking asylum in neighboring nations. The Syrian refugee crisis has been the most significant humanitarian and refugee crisis of our time which has been a result of different occurrences. Due to the incidents of war and conflict in Syria, it has driven more than 4 million individuals to seek refuge in other nations which has made it the most significant refugee crisis for almost a century now. In a majority of the cases, a high number of the populations from Syrian are residing in Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, along with other neighboring countries. However, there are significant factors that have led to a high number of Syrians fleeing to neighboring countries. The eruption of conflict and civil war within the nations has led to a brutal attack that has killed thousands of people and torn the nation apart along with dragging the standards of living down. The civil war has led to the destruction of healthcare centers, schools, homes, along with other basic requirements that people need to sustain their livelihood. Since more than seven million people were forced to flee their homes within Syria, almost half of the people are either internally displaced or refugees (Yazgan et al., 2015).

Correspondingly, the Syrian crisis is delivering significant impact not only on the Syrian population but on other neighboring nations as well as the people are seeking asylum in the countries of which the numbers are significantly high. In 2016, the United Nations (UN) identified approximately 13 million Syrians required assistance. Within the population, more than 6 million of the people are internally displaced within Syrian while nearly 5 million refugees are seeking asylum outside Syria into the neighboring countries (Ostrand, 2015). The internally displaced are among the population feeling the need to remain in Syria since they have lost hope in migrating to other countries as some of them are barring them from access to their borders. In a majority of the occurrences, the internally displaces population comprises men as some of them are forced to remain in the country and others involved in the civil war.

On the other hand, there are high percentages of women, children, and other vulnerable populations such as the elderly migrating to other countries in search of refuge. According to the United Nations (UN), in 2015, Turkey has been the largest refugee-hosting country in the world with approximately 1.8 million Syrians with others to Lebanon (1.1milion Syrians refugees), Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, and North Africa as well. Moreover, more than half of the Syrian refugees are children. Women, children, and other vulnerable populations are among the highly fleeing people (Ostrand, 2015).

Health Needs of The Syrian Refugees

However, there are two primary health needs for the refugees or the internally displaced populations. The Syrian refugees lack the proper medical attention and medicine with some of the sufferings from acute conditions and others from chronic diseases. The second significant health need for the refugees is proper hygiene and food. In most cases, the children are experiencing acute conditions such as respiratory illnesses, fever, and injuries, along with diarrhea as a result of poor hygiene and lack of clean food. In other cases, the adults are experiencing chronic conditions such as hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. It is a result of the high instances of smoking notes among the Syrian population (Sirin & Rogers-Sirin, 2015).

Psychological Responses of Syrian Refugees

Similarly, the Syrian refugees or internally displaced populations are involving it in different psychological responses. Desperation and anxiety are amongst the two significant psychological reactions that the Syrian refugees are majorly showing. Due to the cases of posttraumatic stress as a result of the civil war, most of the populations have encountered different violations and attacks which have led to the feeling of anxiety increasing the anxiety disorder (Yazgan et al., 2015). In other occurrences, the rates of desperation are rising as most of the population both refugees and internally displaced are essential services such as shelter, food, and healthcare. However, I believe it is equally fair to understand the challenges and issues the Syrian refugees are encountering especially in neighboring countries during their migration journeys.

Stressors Facing the Syrian Refugees

Although most of the Syrian populations are fleeing to other neighboring countries in search of a better life, different stressors are affecting the internally displaced or the refugees in their relocated countries. Integration challenges are among the significant stressors affecting the Syrian refugees. Syrians need help in integrating quickly into the cultural practices in the new states. Most of the populations have been through displacement and suffering and already spent years away from their homes. Also, some have encountered traumatic events which if not helped, may lead to different mental health impacts in case they cannot adapt to the new countries. On the other hand, the issue of violence has been another stressor facing the Syrian refugees. In most cases, for an individual to acquire employment or money to raise food, they are assigned to different activities which result in violence, especially for the women and children. Thus, violence has been a significant stressor to the population (Zetter & Ruaudel, 2014).

Conclusion

Lately, most of the Syrian refugees have no prospect of returning home shortly comparing the differences in life between their home countries and the new countries. A high number of the populations are moving into Europe for one reason or the other. In most cases, it is because they see better chances of hope and more opportunities in Europe than other neighboring countries that are isolated. Nonetheless, nurses can help impact the situation and alleviate the suffering in different ways. For instance, the women and children are amongst the suffering populations as some of them are left nurses injured from violence among other happenings. Thus, with the involvement of nurses in the practices, it looks at maintaining the welfare of the Syrian refugees.
