Introduction
Due to the increasing spread of vaping-related diseases, President Trump, and executive health officials convened at the White House to deliberate on the measure they will implement to keep vaping products away from adolescents (Lamarque n.p). President Trump proposed a ban on the sale of flavored e-cigarettes to teenagers, in the wake of increased lung disorders in the U.S (Lamarque n.p). Mr. Trump stated that "we cannot allow citizens to get sick, and we cannot have our children become messed by the vaping habit" (Lamarque n.p). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration indicated that they would implement a plan in the ensuing weeks to remove flavored e-cigarettes and nicotine pods from the market (Lamarque n.p). The ban would also affect the manufacturers of mint and menthol-flavored e-cigarettes (Lamarque n.p). The essay will explain why Trump's administration opts to impose a ban on vaping and vaping products, especially for our adolescents.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse stated that twelve "grader" vaping in 2017 was 27.9%, and it upsurged to 37.5% as of December 2018 (Gottlieb 40). The situation is getting out of hand because there is no clear treatment plan for treating addicted teens who are addicted to vaping. According to last summer's surprising statistics, there were nearly 500 cases of vaping-related respiratory diseases in almost three dozen states (Lamarque n.p). The number of those who succumbed to these illnesses was six. Michigan set the trend by becoming the first state to ban the sale of vaping products (Lamarque n.p). Other states like New York, California, and Massachusetts are also considering similar measures.
In a survey that was done by The New York Times, five million young people, mostly in their high school ages reported that they had used e-cigarettes recently (Lamarque n.p). Approximately one-quarter of the nation's high school learners stated they had used and even sold to other students within the last month (Lamarque n.p). Juul provided a counterargument by denying that their vaping products are aimed at minors (Lamarque n.p). Juul went on to state that about 86% of their sales were from mint and other flavors, therefore the decision would further dent affect their sales margins (Lamarque n.p).
Some vape shop owners in the U.S. indicate that E-cigarettes are regarded as a less harmful way for people to smoke nicotine than cigarettes (LaVito n.p). However, the government has maintained most of these vaping products are increasingly being used by teenagers, prompting regulators to tighten their grip to restrict access of youths to vaping products (LaVito n.p). Vape shop vendors and e-cigarette users have been pushing hard against banning flavors, alluding that it would send most of the citizens back to cigarette smoking (LaVito n.p). Political analysts have also argued that the decision to ban vaping and sale of vaping products would cost Trump the election.
Health officials have indicated that vaping product contains THC, a substance that makes people "high" after smoking cannabis (LaVito n.p). Notwithstanding, the fact that Trump's administration will ban e-cigarette, there is an inevitable looming shakeup in the industry (LaVito n.p). Vaping producing firms will now be required to provide regulatory applications for their products that are already on the market. Thereafter, the FDA will assess the devices and liquids' safety before deciding whether the product can be introduced to the market. The only flavors that will exclude include; methanol and tobacco (Hirsch n.p).
Conclusion
In conclusion, the essay has elaborated clearly why Trump's administration intends on banning the sale and use of flavored products with the exception of methanol and tobacco flavors. There has been an increase in the use twelve grader vaping products by high school kids. According to statistics done in 2017, the rate of consumption was 27.9%, but it increased to 37.5% as of December 2018 (Gottlieb 40). An upsurge in the cases of vaping-related respiratory diseases in almost thirty states also caught the attention of President Trump who convened a meeting with top health officials to discuss the issue of the intended ban on the sale of vaping products. However, Some vape shop owners in the U.S. indicate that E-cigarettes are regarded as a less harmful way for people to smoke nicotine than cigarettes.
