Introduction
The year that I was born was significant because there were several inventions such as the camera phone, USB flash drive and Bluetooth. This essay will discuss Bluetooth technology from its initial stages in 2000, its growth and how it has impacted people and activities all over the world. Bluetooth is a wireless technology that is used for exchanging data between mobile and fixed devices over small distances by use of short wavelength. Bluetooth helps to bring electronic gadgets together to share whatever signals they require without the use of wires. The name Bluetooth originated from Harald Bluetooth, who united the Scandinavians in the tenth century. There are three categories of Bluetooth devices, which include classic Bluetooth, Bluetooth single-mode, and Bluetooth dual-mode (Puri 244). Bluetooth was invented in the year 2000 by a scholar known as Jaap Haartsen to develop wireless headsets. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi differ though many people confuse the two. Bluetooth is capable of connecting gadgets without using wires, while Wi-Fi offers high-speed access to the internet. Bluetooth exists in a variety of products such as speakers, telephones, media players, laptops, robotics systems, and tablets. Due to the connectivity of Bluetooth between different devices, companies such as Google and Apple have finally interfered with the technology. Since Bluetooth is capable of advertising all the services that it provides, it is easier to use it due to its security and the permission that it allows for comparing to other types of networks.
Bluetooth is capable of operating at a frequency between 2.4 and 2.8 GHz. Bluetooth uses a radio technology that is referred to as a frequency-hopping spread spectrum. The data transmitted by Bluetooth is shared into packets where every packet is sent on its channel. The packet has a master architecture that can communicate with several piconets up to seven, although not all devices are capable of reaching this maximum (Puri 245). The master is capable of choosing which device to address where the slave has to listen to every command from the master. To use Bluetooth technology, the equipment involved must be able to interpret some Bluetooth profiles, which are definitions that Bluetooth devices.
The Bluetooth Invention in the Year 2000
Between 958 and 970 AD, Denmark was governed by Harald Blatant, who is also called Harald Bluetooth. The millennium brings about the earliest days of modern Bluetooth that is recognized in the current generation. In the year 1995, the Bluetooth inventor was joined by an engineer by the name Sven Mattison who was dealing with wireless communication technologies. In 1990 the Bluetooth development was looking for a name to replace the MC link. Before and after the invention of Bluetooth technology, there have been ten patents that are involved in protecting Bluetooth technology. This patent was first filled in the year 1997 and later issued in July 2003. By the end of 2012, the sale of Bluetooth products reached two million, and by the end of 2014, Bluetooth membership had reached a total of 24000 members.
Over the past, there have been some research efforts that have been done on Bluetooth technology. The technology has been applied in different domains over the previous years. The following are some of the areas where research has been done: Health: A lot of research has been carried out in this sector to demonstrate the use of Bluetooth to enhance health applications (Kaur 96). The Bluetooth low energy (BLE) has been useful in implementing and monitoring temperature, humidity, and body temperature. The monitoring of and examination of heart rate, blood pressure has become popular where data can be transferred from sensors through Bluetooth to near devices such as smartphones. Through the use of Bluetooth in developing healthcare, researchers have identified the possibility of enhancing physiological signals such as heart rate variability. Secondly, is Location tracking; The community is also exploring the use of BLE for tracking and positioning systems. For instance, the use of BLE beacons can be used in determining the location of vehicles without the use of a global positioning system (GPS) (Kaur 99.) The research has shown that the use of BLE beacons is a technology that is currently used to identify and track people in micro-locations such as buildings. Finally, Security; As the number of devices that have been installed by Bluetooth is continuously increasing research focusing and analyzing the security of BLE devices. Studies from BLE have shown that the development of extra protection enhances large and more generations.
Bluetooth is applicable in sending and receiving radio waves in a band of seventy- nine various channels. The frequency is positioned on 2.45 GHz set apart from television, radio and telephones. The rate is reserved for applications in industrial, medical gadgets, and scientific purposes. The frequency requires low power input, and their metered connection is meant for short distances. The power transmitters installed in gadgets applying Bluetooth technology limits signal distance. These aspects make Bluetooth more secure than other wireless channels. Bluetooth devices work by automatically detecting and connecting. Several devices can use the frequency at the same time; a maximum of eight devices can share information at once without any difficulties (Arumugam et al. 287). This is capable since each pair can apply one of the 79 available networks. If the devices detect a channel that is already under use, they randomly switch to another frequency. The devices are programmed to change frequencies multiple times per second to minimize the probability of interference of the network. A group of more than two devices can apply a mini-computer channel referred to as a piconet. The piconet is an ad hoc channel that connects a wireless group of devices using Bluetooth equipment protocols by synchronizing them to the same frequency. The channel is flexible in such that devices can optionally join or exit the sharing group. A single device acts as the administrator for the protocol while the other members follow the protocols as instructed. Two or more piconets can join to exchange information forming another aspect of the Bluetooth known as a scatternet.
Bluetooth channel is capable of working with other wireless frequencies to ensure elite services for the customers. For example, consumers often confuse Wi-Fi because they apply for similar programs. However, there is a difference as Bluetooth channel is used to link computers, phones, and other electronic devices through ad-hoc over short distances. Wi-Fi is used to transfer or access large data loads between electronic devices and the internet covering a vast scope. Nevertheless, both technologies are complementary as they can be applied together to enable one’s electronic device to work more conveniently.
Like many other frequencies, Bluetooth devices are installed with security features that ensure the safety of their users. One of the significant aspects is encrypting the rate to eliminate unwanted users. Encrypted channels enable users to restrict various devices and connect only with the method of choice. For instance, one can allow their cellphone to operate only under specific Bluetooth hands-free program and no other. This aspect is referred to as Bluetooth device-level security. Additionally, users can restrict the activities their gadgets tend to do with other devices through service-level security.
Like any other wireless technology, Bluetooth can be tricky to use at times. The technology is a battery drainer for mobile gadgets. One can also get out of range interrupting the data exchange; additionally, developing and maintaining a stable connection between devices is not as easy as it should be. With the rapid growth of technology, Bluetooth has to advance some of its features to enable it to compete in the global market of technology. The Bluetooth developers have realized the need to address the gaps in the network; they include connection to a variety of devices, increasing network speed, and improving the security of the channel. As part of the development, experts are coming up with improved versions of the technology. At the start, there was Bluetooth version 2.1, which supported the simple connection between gadgets (Nasim 43). The technology was advanced to Bluetooth version 3.0, which was faster and consumed less power. A more recent version is Bluetooth Smart version 4.0+; the model has a better connection than the previous versions, covers a wide range, applies less power, and integrates better with mobile applications. The most recent model is Bluetooth 5, which has maximized speed, scale, and bandwidth.
Bluetooth tends to have a good future in the world of technology; this is because the channel fulfills the fundamental need for proximity connections. The aspect is valuable to lead telecommunication companies that include Ericsson, 3-com, Intel, Nokia, Microsoft, and Toshiba. More than 1800 technology manufacturers joined the Bluetooth company initiative globally. According to research by world marketers, the use of the Bluetooth channel is predicted to increase rapidly due to modern technology (Cooper 42). The adoption of smartphone devices across the world, including developing countries, proves to play a vital role in the spread of Bluetooth technology worldwide. The mobile information society is highly dependent on the model because it makes it enables exploration of a wide range of interactions.
Bluetooth founders have hinted on future features expected in the next version of the Bluetooth channel. The model is meant to expand the sharing possibilities while using compatible gadgets like wireless headphones, smartphones, and hearing aids. The version, which is labeled Bluetooth L.E. Audio, will be launched later in 2020. The channel will be specified to audio streaming using the Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) chip. Bluetooth will be the first technology channel to apply BLE chips to stream audio; the version will enable users with compatible devices to listen to the same music. A new type of Bluetooth headphones are installed with a feature called multipoint; the aspect allows the gadget to be connected to many devices at the same time. The link between the two models of technology is developing a relationship between the source gadget for audio with different wireless headphones. The headphones can share the stereo signal into separate frequencies, and wire forms the primary connection.
The L.E. audio version hearing aids will be able to last longer while using less charge; the devices will also connect easily to various sources compared to the past. The expected Bluetooth model is equipped with a new codec entitled Low Complexity Communications Codec (L.C. 3). The codec will enable developers and manufacturers to deliver a better quality of audio while utilizing half the power used in the past. L.E. Audio is a unique implementation with different software and hardware installations (Burrows 1).
Bluetooth is a wireless channel; commonly, wireless networks are considered less secure compared to wired networks. The reason is that it is easier to hack information that is zapping forth and back via open air. One can just ensure they are in the range of the wireless frequency and pick up signals using an enabled device. Once that has happened, the intruder can join the rate and access the information. Wrongdoers have developed strategies of hijacking devices via blue bugging, this happens without the owners' knowledge, and the intruder can access all data shared to or from the device (Musale and Apte 4). Bluetooth technology also allows people to send commercial messages to other people's devices even without their knowledge;...
