Introduction
The article by Fox, MJ. (2020) describes how people wastewater all over the world. However, most people do not realize that wastage of water is a serious problem which affects all individuals and ought to be handled as soon as possible. The article describes that the world needs serious, positive actions, and awareness to ensure there are effective solutions put in place to solve the challenge of water wastage. In addition, the article describes that the water footprint of an individual is much higher than would think and classifies the footprints into three categories that include green, yellow, and blue water footprints.
Description of the Problem
The article highlights the challenge of water wastage across the planet. For instance, in the blue footprint, water is wasted in various ways such as water used to flush a toilet, to take a shower, or the one used to run home sprinklers. Besides, a lot of water is also wasted in the green footprint where water is used to directly produce food that individuals consume. Moreover, water wastage also occurs in the yellow footprint, which most people fail to consider. For instance, a lot of water is wasted to produce energy, run industries, as well in technology.
First Solution
One solution to blue footprint water is the use of water-saving toilets as well as installing a water-saving showerhead. Installing toilets that use less water help in reducing the usage of toilet water by 20 to 60 percent. Besides, individuals should use shower heads that regulate water to allow only the right amount of water to pour from the shower.
Strengths to the Solution
A lot of water is saved, and it allows individuals to only use water that is necessary. Using water-saving toilets and showerheads would help in reducing the amount of water wasted by 20 percent.
The Weakness of the solution
Water-saving toilets and showerheads are expensive to purchase and may also wear out.
Second Solution
The use of drip irrigation method is one of the best ways to conserve water in the green footprint.
Strength of the Solution
When farmers use drip irrigation to irrigate their crops, there is less water that is lost to evaporation or runoff. It also has a continuous flow that helps in direct and deep penetration of water into the soil, thus getting into the root zone.
The Weakness of the Solution
Some of the weaknesses of using drip irrigation to conserve water include high initial costs of tubes, and pipes may wear out as well as there might be potential overwatering.
The Best Solution
The best solution for all types of footprint waters is by recycling the used water. Recycling of water is the best solution because it leads to bigger impacts on the environment, such as preventing pollution, especially in the industrial context. Besides, recycling water helps to reduce demands and stress on freshwater supply as well as improves sustainability. For instance, if an industry embraces the concept of recycling water, it is able to save on the costs of getting fresh water from a source and also cuts down on compliance costs.
Conclusion
Water wastage is a global challenge, and individuals, as well as organizations, should develop innovative ways on how to conserve water. One of the best ways to conserve and prevent water wastages is recycling water. Recycling provides many benefits to individuals and organizations, such as preventing pollution.
