Introduction
Evidence-based nursing care management involves making standard decisions and giving nursing care to patients based on current relevant research and clinical expertise to achieve optimal outcomes in the healthcare system (Schaper et al., 2016). Mary Craig is a forty-two-year-old lady female from Texas who is diagnosed with type II diabetes. She needs to be given total nursing care that will help in treating type II diabetes. Diabetic patients are at higher risk of diabetes complications like nutritional imbalance, heart disease, and stroke. Therefore, identifying these problems early and teaching Mary on the care needed will help in managing this type II diabetes. The methods of instruction that I will use on Mary includes providing nurse aides and nurse-directed interventions. Mary is married with one son who is presumed pre-diabetic and proper nursing care should be submitted to ensure the son doesn't get to infected with diabetes. There is no history of diabetes in her family.
Evidence-Based Nursing Care on Diabetics Patients
Abstract
The purpose of this research was to establish the effects of evidence-based practice on patients with type two diabetes. The research strategies used were manual search and electronic database. The study was conducted in primary care with participants with type 2 diabetes with a five-months follow up. However, the data provided is not enough to conclude the effectiveness of evidence-based nursing care for patients with diabetes.
Literature Review
There have been increased interests in health care systems to use evidence-based nursing care to patients with diabetes. The results have been positive though there is no sufficient post-discharge care. Diabetes patients, especially those with type two diabetes, need a lot of care and attention from the nurses for the to manage this stage of diabetes.
Methods for Research
A total of ten patients were used as samples, and twelve nurses. Type of research used was electronic and manual search. The process of research included involving the patients and nurses with study questionnaires on the impacts of evidence-based practice in diabetic conditions. The other method was a search on the internet of how crucial evidence-based care was to diabetics patients.
Data Analysis
From the findings, 82% of patients diagnosed with diabetes benefited from evidence-based nursing care. From the questionnaires, nurses were equipped with sufficient skills and had a good knowledge when dealing with diabetes patients. There was only 7.24% of complaints from the internet on the effectiveness of evidence-based practice, especially those diabetics patients who never followed instructions and dosage prescriptions (Schaper et al., 2016).
Discussion
From the results, evidence-based practice is statistically significant in managing type two diabetes. It is almost impossible to conclude since the information provided is too limited, and the period of study was too short. From the questionnaires, nurses responded positively, but there is a need to educate the nurses further for them to handle their practices with professionalism. The nurses need to dig deeper and do thorough research on how to help the patients manage the type two diabetes. The nurses should also make a follow up on their patients and advise them on the post-discharge services. Sharing the post-discharge information with the patient helps the patient know the health's progress and consult in case of any difficulties. Using evidence-based nursing care for patients with diabetes will ease the work of the nurse and the healthcare system.
Patient Teaching Tools
Patient teaching tools provide the nurse, patient, and the family with information about the examined disease (LoBiondo-Wood,2017). These patient tools range from original tools to existing tools. The existing tools include the use of the internet, the use of brochures, and nursing journals. Information from the internet can be obtained through internet web sites, listservs, and newsgroups.
The original teaching tool to use on the patient will include the nursing aides. These aides involve educating the patient on effective diet management. Monitoring the patient's health by performing tests to read any changes in the levels of sugar in the blood is also another nursing aide that I'll apply. Also, I'll show the patient how to inject themselves with insulin, making sure they understand the process and making them perform the procedure on an orange. I will guide them on how to maintain a healthy diet and exercise. For post-discharge assistance, I will encourage the patient to consult a community clinic to know the progress of her health.
Teaching Plan
Applying the patient with diabetes teaching plan will educate the patient on the possible consequences of diabetes and providing knowledge on how she will help in minimizing the need to depend on insulin injections to manage her diabetes. The objectives of the teaching plan include the following; the patient will be able to understand and define well the different types of diabetes and differentiating the other types of diabetes from hers. The patient will be able to understand and explain why diet considerations and the need for healthy exercise are necessary for people with diabetes. According to (Dang, 2017), this objective will help the patient to integrate such considerations into her current lifestyle. The patient will be able to do the required self-monitoring of levels of blood glucose and will be able to inject herself with the right proportions of insulin as prescribed by the doctor.
The target age of the teaching plan are people aged forty and above since the type two diabetes affects people at this age bracket. I will present the teaching plan in a PowerPoint presentation to bring out the objectives of the teaching plan. I chose this teaching tool because the number of people getting diagnosed with type two diabetes is increasing every day.
Conclusion
In conclusion, evidence-based nursing care and teaching is the perfect way of managing a health problem. It provides all the needed information and actions to take to deal with the problem. Proper research and patient's preferences should be the primary considerations for adequate evidence-based nursing care. Proper teaching tools should be used to provide information to avoid all sorts of inconvenience.
