Introduction
New Belgium Brewing Company is a beer producing company that has been able to come up with measures of reducing pollution in the environment. The measures include the company becoming the first company in the United States to be powered by wind power. The company comes up with the strategy of using clean and renewable source of income as a measure of reducing pollution that occurs when power is generated using fossil fuel sources. The company also uses steam condenser that facilitates the recycling of water. The recycled water is used for various purposes within the company.
The New Belgium Brewing Company want to control various environmental challenges that have been caused by pollution. The environmental challenges include pollution that is caused when energy is produced using nonrenewable sources of energy (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2015). The company uses a lot of energy in its production hence using renewable sources of energy contributes a lot to the conservation of the environment. The company also recycles water by cooling steam to reduce water wastage. The strategies used include recycling water and using wind power to conserve the environment. The company has taken a strong stance of stability to fulfill its responsibility of conserving the environment as a form of social responsibility.
Yes, I agree that the social responsibility of the new Belgium Company gives it a competitive advantage. The approach by the new Belgium Company to focus on social responsibility provides the company with an opportunity to have a competitive advantage over its competitors because the methods of renewing energy used make the company reduce operational costs (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2015). The wind power source of energy uses fewer resources when compared to fossil fuels that make the company incur a lot of costs on power bills. Reduced costs increase the profits that the company makes. The recycling of water also reducing the expenses that are incurred when paying water bills, the recycling ensures that there is no water wastage hence reducing water wastage.
Any company can engage in corporate social responsibility regardless of the kind of activities that the company engages in. Companies such as the New Belgium Brewing Company that engage in activities that are considered to offer products that are against the values of the society (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2015). Such products include alcoholic beverages and tobacco products. Not all people in the society accept the products that they produce and therefore their efforts to engage in social responsibility in the community. It's the responsibility of the companies to engage in social responsibility.
The company has made the right and ethical decision of increasing its profit margin by coming up with the right measures to reduce the challenges that the company experiences (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2015). I believe that the actions and initiatives taken by the new Belgium Company are not socially responsible because the alcoholic beverages that it produces affect the people negatively. Alcohol makes people irresponsible; hence, the activities of the company are not socially responsible. The actions that the company engages in are meant to reduce operating costs not to help the society. Social responsibility activities include activities that transform the society positively. To conclude, the New Belgium Brewing Company can reduce the cost of its operations, gaining competitive advantage.
