Introduction
In North Carolina school report card is essential to parents, educators and researchers since it helps those involved in analyzing the progress of different students at each level of education and their academic progression. The report cards are accessible in two different ways; easy- to navigate, this is for the parents and educators, and the analytical section for the researchers and this type of report card contains detailed data. The 2018-19 school reports contain schools performance grades by subgroup, advanced course enrollment by subgroup among others. Luther Nick Jeralds Middle School from the analysis of the report, the school is improving in performance annually and in 2019 it was ranked as the 610th of 730 school in North Carolina middle school.Making it worse than 84.4% of middle schools in North Carolina. Due to the results obtained by the school, all the students in the school should be encourage to do their best. This they do by encouraging the students, doing research on how to improve performance and ensuring that all the necessary resources required for learning are easily available, students can access them in ease, and they are guided on how to read and understand the concepts they find to be challenging. From 2006 the school's performance has been unstable or instance in 2012 there was an improvement and they obtained a 30% ranking position statewide and in the year 2018 the performance dropped by 13.7% as compared to the year 2012. In addition, the school was ranked at position 691. However, in 2019 the school improved in both ranking percentage and position statewide by obtaining 15.6 % (SchoolDigger, n.d)
School improvement strategies of Luther Nick Jeralds Middle School are communication where everybody is encouraged to say his or her opinions on the way he or she thinks the teachers and the students should improve on for them to improve their performance. Family support is another strategy of improving the schools performance, where all the people who monitor the academic progress of the students suggests on how the performance of certain schools can be enhanced and when the changes for improving the performance should be made. Decision making and partnership is also used as a way of improving the schools performance and here the decisions that are made by the board of management should corporate with the school's vision and mission so that students can know the set goals and objectives of the school in case they work hard to improve their performance.
Strategies put in place for the improvement of the school's performance are not practically applied resulting in poor performance within the school. Considering communication as a strategy, the school should start with a vision of the school so that both the student, teachers and other stakeholders may know what the school is pursuing before coming up with the goals. To improve the vision of the school, the school should establish a joint definition that will guide the students to obtain the outlined goals. Before writing down ways of improving the performance for the school, the stakeholders should conduct a needs assessment to outline specific action steps both the teachers and the students should take to improve the performance.
Family support is also one of the strategies of improving the students' performance. However, in Luther Nick Jeralds Middle School the strategy is not effective since many families are not as supportive as require when it considering ways to improve performance. Family engagement school level quality indicator checklist shows that the family support in the school is not effective making the students to perform poorly in their examination. Its role is to decide if a school has the required structures in place to ensure significant family commitment. Resch, Mireles, Benz, Grenwelge, Peterson, and Zhang, (2010) talks of how involvement of a family in improving the well-being and academic improvement of children with disabilities is the essential thing that every school that deals with students with disabilities should embrace to improve the performance of the students.
