Knowledge of the Certified Public Manager course has been of great benefit to me despite a few financial challenges that I have been experiencing since I began CPM I. The course outline covers crucial managerial topics for managers. Some of the skills and capabilities one can gain from CPM include but are not limited to developing and effectively building teams that can work together to realize set goals (SummaSource, 2018). Secondly, CPM equips learners with communication skills in writing as managers are always charged with conveying written messages to different departments. Thirdly, the students of CPM learn how to use modern technology in management as the world is ever-changing technologically; thus, such knowledge is vital for the future progress of an organization. Lastly, the CPM course enables managers to perfect their emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence has been associated with high performance; thus, the learners can develop their emotional intelligence and those of their coworkers to ensure the organization’s goals and objectives are realized.
CPM I has been of great benefit to me as far as managerial skills are concerned. The experience I have gained from the CPM course has enabled me to participate in several events. For instance, I have successfully gained public speaking skills from CPM, which helped me finish 18 minutes of speech, which I could not have managed without going through this course. Similarly, I have developed a wide range of managerial skills while at Camp Chandler that have transformed my career. The institution equipped me with team development, leadership, financial management, and accountability, to mention a few that would help me further my CPM studies (SummaSource, 2018). In essence, taking a course in Certified Public Management would not only liberate one from poor leadership but it goes a long way in improving one’s managerial capability to become an effective and excellent performer in an organization.
However, the journey to acquire CPM skills has not been comfortable on my side; raising funds to cater to my expenses and paying a fee for my study program has been challenging. Initially, Medicaid was taking advantage of funding to give scholarships to some of its employees. For instance, AUM received funds allocated for certified public managers’ scholarships, but it reached a time when such assistance ceased posing a great challenge to me. I am currently working at the Alabama Medicaid Agency, which is giving me another opportunity to boost my experience and grow my performance in leadership and supervisory roles. I have noticed that CPM has helped me develop specific skills in civilian leadership. Comparing the skills I had when I was a leader for lower and junior enlisted soldiers, there is a difference because, at that time, I lacked soft skills in CPM.
The CPM I helped me get pre-requisite skills in certified public management; thus, if I get the necessary funding, I take CPM II to better understand some of the relevant leadership skills. Advancement in CPM II would allow acquiring skills in areas that were not covered (AUM, n.d). For example, CPM II would equip me with Audit Management skills, which are vital to an organization as it accelerates goal accomplishment. Secondly, CPM II would provide me with skills in building a strategic partnership that has to do with ensuring all workers work towards achieving the organization’s goals and removing goal blindness among employees in an organization. Lastly, CPM II would help me improve on my customer relations by creating a customer-centered culture.
