Introduction
In every health care scenario, it is essential to understand the details before making any significant decision. In this case, there is a prescription under the treatment plan deriving that the child should be administered 100g of the particular medication daily. However, according to the nurses' notes, they show that only 100mg of the required medication has been administered to the patient for the past three days each morning. Therefore, this derives that there is a problem since according to the treatment plan the child's physician ordered 100g of the medication administered daily, but for the last three days, the child has been receiving 100mg of the requested medication thus showing on the problem. Nursing negligence has been one of the reasons causing significant challenges and effects on the quality of healthcare delivered to patients. In this case, nursing negligence is evident considering that the child is prone to severe complications. Since this situation involves an example of an under-dosage, it could lead to long-term complications considering that the medication administered was supposed to deliver a particular treatment.
Possible Solutions
In the strive to acquire the most appropriate solution, it is critical to understand the overall healthcare scenario. The first step according to this solution is to seek clarification from the child's physician to clear up the confusion about the dosage. This is something that should be done daily; however, it is not the case in this healthcare scenario since the child was medicated wrongly for three days. Nurses administering medication need to adhere to the requirements of the nursing vocation and safeguarding the safety of patients. Even though I believe the nursing error was unintentional, this is nursing negligence. First, I would contact the responsible nurse and the head nurse as well and understand the situations surrounding this occurrence. After confirming the correct dosage for the medications from the child's physician, I would assign a new nurse to the child. Also, I would make the nurses own up to their mistakes by giving them a compulsory one week leave to ensure nursing negligence does not occur again.
Additionally, another possible solution to this case would be taking the necessary nursing competence action. First, after ensuring that the child is not suffering a severe complication, I would not let the involved nurse work in the ward until the necessary and proper training was completed. In this solution, it does not only involve the responsible nurse and the head nurse but the entire nursing department as a whole. In strengthening this solution, I would ensure an introduction of a training program for every nurse with the aim of providing that such nursing errors do not occur again. However, in comparing these solutions, they both aim at making sure that the situation is handled and the child receives the quality care needed. Also, both solutions provide a platform for improvement of services among other critical nursing competencies. In contrast to these solutions, the first solutions aim at punishing the involved nurses; however, the second solution looks at improving the situation and ensuring that it does not occur again.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the best solution involves the introduction of nursing training on nursing negligence and errors. I believe it is the best solution since the practice of caregiving in healthcare facilities is a process that involves different healthcare practitioners. Also, in as much as children are concerned, it could be difficult to identify a particular problem. Thus, this solution aims at resolving other interrelated issues. Mistakes are human nature; however, nursing professionals are responsible for caring for the people; hence the quality of care is critical.
