Introduction

With the institution having quite a number of Local Area Networks in different rooms, floors or parts of the institution, there would be a great reason to have all these individual LANs interconnected together to come up with one single unit of network using the same devices for the network provider. Therefore, there are several technical methods that would be used by the organization to have their LANs connected together and form a bigger network. For the connection of the various local area networks in the institution, there are three different technical methods that would be used for the LAN connection but however they would not function in the same way (IEEE standard for information technology--telecommunications and information exchange between systems--Local and metropolitan area networks--specific requirements, 2011). In the first place, the geographical area that the technical methods would cover will differ in a big way. The three main technical methods that would interconnect these LANs would be the CAN, MAN and WAN technologies.

The CAN

As provided by (IEEE standard for information technology-telecommunications and information exchange between systems-Local and metropolitan area networks-specific requirements, 2011) the CAN as always known is the connection of several LANs within the same location but in different buildings. Basically, it will involve taking the local area network in a certain building and making it larger or expanding it to ensure that it covers several buildings within the same range. However, there are those limits of distance it cannot exceed and therefore despite the fact that the buildings of the institution will be interconnected to share the same network and resources, this would seem not to be sufficient to the institution. This is because the institution wants to have their schools in different geographical locations and each of them having their own LANs interconnected. For the very expensive resources which can only be shared within nearly all their distinct campuses in different locations, having a CAN would only seem to be negligible. It will only help within a single campus and not all the campuses that this institution has.

The MAN

This is the other technical method that could help the university interconnect their LANs and get a single and more functional network. Having the metropolitan area network put in place in the university will make it possible to first interconnect the various campuses and or the campus buildings which the university has within one city. This will be so because the connections of the network will be of some specified range and thus the university will just need to get a network service provider (NSP) who will be responsible for providing the network services to all the buildings which the university owns within that particular location and or city(Lee and Kim, 2018). In addition, the good thing with this kind of technology or method for the connection of the university's multiple LANs is that the provider of internet acquired will be able to offer high-speed internet rates and thus, as a result, the network efficiency and functionality will have been highly boosted.

Moreover, use of this technology to interconnect the multiple LANs owned by the university but in different buildings within a specific town or city will reduce the network delays and thus ensure that the services the clients request from the servers are provided with ease and within reduced time frames unlike the other kinds of technologies used in networking.

WAN Technology

On the other hand, there is yet another important technical method that the university would make use of in their consideration of the best way they would have all their LANs connected together. The advantage with this is that there would be a wide range of buildings in different cities, towns and or campuses interconnected together forming one network at the end of it all (Lee and Kim, 2018). This network would serve the university both as a single area network within one room or different floors within one building, as a network between connecting multiple buildings in the same compound, as a MAN serving different buildings of the campus within a town and or city and lastly and it would work to serve various campuses within different locations, towns, and cities.

(Lauren and Pigg, 2016) add that with consideration of the above three technologies for connection of the various LANs, the case of considering the geographical location size each of the technologies would serve makes the WAN stand in a better position to be the network that the university should give the first priority at the expense of the other...
