Introduction

Sanantha Shaurya and I had an interview at her office, Encino Hospital Medical Centre talking about her career as a physician and how pluralism plays out in her line. We also had a talk on resilience for the healthcare practitioners. "My day does not have a specific time when I may start. My patients will always come first. Therefore, it is not time that governs my day, but rather my patients," Sanantha states with a smile. She is talking about the odd times she has to stay or the early mornings that she must report seeing a patient who calls early. She states that she learned about the use of medicine in medical school. However, her practice has taught her that alternative medicine also works effectively in some cases. "Indo-Americans are known for the use of alternative medicine. Naturally, many of my patients are Indian, and thus, I find myself recommending some of the remedies,' she explains. Patients and empathy have helped her reconcile conventional medicine with the alternative.

The use of berries is common among the native communities. The patient was for the idea use of the traditional method to address her gynecological issues. Although she respects the opinion of her patients, she states that it was a difficult situation. Her experience in medicine is that conventional and evidence-based medicine is the best approach. She also owes a duty to the patient by reporting the facts. The tricky part is where the decision lies with the patient. Patience and use of past cases helped to change the mind of the patient to use the conventional means.

"It is not easy to deal with such patients who believe in alternative medicine. In most cases, they are brought here when the situation is in a dire state. However, patience helps in addressing such patients," she states. She further says that there is no need for using the two alongside each other. Since the alternative has failed by the time the patient gets to her, she is of the idea that it is time for conventional medicine.

The placebo effect sometimes helps in addressing conditions. A patient may be in pain, but the physician has not had the time to determine the problem. As a way of helping them to relax, she explains that any pill may be administered, and it helps to calm a patient before the real cause is identified. Sanantha states that she has never used alternative medicine. However, she agrees that those who may have used it do not readily divulge such information to physicians. Additionally, she states that she has never found it better to recommend the use of traditional medicine over the alternative. "Although the use of proper nutrition is always a recommendation of any doctor, it is near impossible to get one recommending traditional medicine," she states. She says that her parents were Indian natives, but they always went for conventional medicine, which shaped her career approach today.

Conclusion

Sanantha states, liability has helped medical practitioners to be sensitive to the feelings and thoughts of the patients. She explains that it is necessary to have an understanding of the interaction between the patient and the practitioner as it helps to eliminate any cases of liability. She further states that the field deals with every culture, and it is only necessary to have acceptance of different views. However, it is important to remain faithful to the practice.
