Introduction
The number of school shootings in the United States continues to rise each and every year. As of May 2018, a total of around forty shootings had been experienced on different campuses in the states. In most cases, these shootings lead to the several deaths and injuries within the school buildings. One major example of such an incident of school shootings is the shooting that took place at Sante Fe High School in Texas (Coaston, Kirby, Stewart, 2018). To prevent these school shootings, the government should implement stricter gun laws, better security and use of counselors in schools.
The school shooting that recently happened in Sante Fe High School in Texas left ten people dead and at least ten others were injured following this particular incident. A seventeen-year-old, Dimitrios Pagourtiz, who had attended the school, was kept in custody as the suspect of this incident. This suspect was charged with capital murder and aggravated assault of a police officer (Coaston, Kirby, Stewart, 2018). This young person admitted to being guilty of the school shooting.
Because of several school shootings that have been taking place in the country, both teachers and students are calling for better ways that can be used to minimize the rates of these incidents within the learning institutions. One way is placing restrictions on purchase and ownership of guns Cook, J., P. (2018). Another way can be to ban assault weapons or any other types of guns. Better funding for mental health services and making more mental resources available in schools can help (Jones, 2018). Trying to solve such societal problems as poor parenting, lack of discipline and morality, high exposure to violent media and media coverage of school shooters can also reduce the rates of school shootings in the nation.
Conclusion
It is clear from the description that the rate at which school shootings are rising in the United States is high. After the incident that left many dead and others injured at the Sante Fe High Scholl led to many people requiring the government to come up with stricter rules that can help in preventing the same from happening in the future. Such ways as placing a restriction on purchase and ownership of guns, banning assault weapons, better funding of mental health services, availing more mental resources, and solving some of the societal problems can reduce these rates within the nation.
