"A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle." Is a saying that is applied to depict what caring is. According to Watson, "caring is the moral ideal of nursing whereby the end is protection, enhancement, and preservation of human dignity."(Watson, 1988). The life of a nurse is indeed full of challenges since they have to interact with all kinds of people and at the same time, maintain their calmness and politeness. Dedication in the nursing field is vital. A nurse must have a strong conscience for them to be able to provide the best healthcare services. The above trajectory demonstrates how education preparation, education roles, leadership, and clinical roles contribute to future goals.
Having worked in assisted living and nursing homes for three years, I learned how to interact and handle all types of patients. Taking care of newborns and their mothers were my favorite. There is nothing sweeter than holding a life that you have helped out till survival. The experience motivated me to become a mother-baby nurse or peds, which I believe through the clinical classes that I have enrolled will make my dream come true. Volunteering in an elementary school equipped me also on how to serve the community and be committed to my role. My goal in the future is to work in a school-based environment and to give back my service to the community. I believe with the experience gained, I will do my duty diligently. My interest has been to become a registered nurse when I grow up; to make this happen, I enrolled in an undergrad class in liberal education as well as being enrolled in a nursing course, which I believe will improve my skills and knowledge necessary in the nursing field. Volunteering as a nurse first is a gesture of how much I am willing to help out, and not just because of the money I get out of it but because I have that seed of helping inside me. Empathetic is a skill obtained while trying to help out the children and mothers back in nursing and living homes. My future goal of becoming a nurse requires this trait to offer quality services to the patients; thus, my earlier experience opened doors for my future career. Teaching small children is not an easy task, and even teachers will agree with me that much dedication, patience, and commitment is needed. Therefore, having volunteered to do such a task only showed how much I care for the well-being of the children. The act is related to my future goal in that I will need to be patient with the patients and to treat them as one would treat a small child. Much care and attention should be given to every patient. Leadership skills obtained when I had to teach small children and help out in nursing patients. Problem-solving skills are vital for one to be able to tackle and handle every patient despite their condition. These skills obtained where I had to deal with various cases of illness and when in elementary school to deal and handle every child despite his/her status. Understanding a child first is important before proceeding to punish them for any mistake made. It is so because they are all raised in different environments and using different values. As a nurse, I believe that I must be willing to exercise equality in the workplace and not prioritize patients, depending on social status. It is thus evident that my past experiences prepared and continues to prepare me on how to be a caring nurse.
