A nurse is a specialist in the healthcare area with the specific skills and knowledge of caring for families, children, individuals and the entire community to ensure they have optimal health status and have a comfortable quality of life in every health issues. Attaining degree in nursing takes four years of training in a university or a college. Within the four years, nursing students experience learning in many sectors like communication, critical thinking, physical science, social sciences, and leadership, to prepare them for the endless interactions with different types of people in need of healthcare in the society (Nieswiadomy & Bailey, 2017).

The primary role of any nurse is to provide care and safety to patients. The whole community depends on nurses for quality health care through regular and continuous check up on the progress of a patient and their response to the preferred mode of medication. A nurse aims at meeting all patient requirements that run from the physical, spiritual, cognitive, emotional and social wants. Besides, helping a patient understand and cope with their heath-status is a key role of a nurse. Acceptance is always the first step towards healing. Offering medication to a patient that has difficulties in accepting their sickness makes slow progress. Therefore, a nurse must reach to their patient and help them through their pain to create a good environment for the medical procedures, especially for the people with critical and long-term illnesses. A nurse that owns a BSN certificate has the critical responsibility of supervising other nurses, which includes educating upcoming nurses in nursing institutions. They uptake such a role in the midst of their number one role of taking care of patients. They have the authority to pass information, knowledge, and skills gained through their continued practice in caring for the sickly to the RN's and LPN's nurses through the theory work and mostly when undertaking their clinical practice (Oelke, Besner & Carter, 2014).

Another key task of BSN nurses is to coordinate the activities within various health departments. For example, a BSN nurse can get the mandate of ensuring proper and timely transfer of patients from one sector to the other, like from the main ward to the critical care unit, as instructed by the doctors. Such responsibilities improve the services offered in health facilities. They ensure that patients don't undergo any delays in treatment which increases the efficiency of the institution which is an essential requirement of a hospital (Oelke, Besner & Carter, 2014).

Short-Term Goals

Attaining a BSN certificate with good grades and good comments from the internship nursing programs is a short-term goal that prepares a nurse for the offset and direction of their career experience. It opens doors and shines some light on the path a nurse follows (Cleary, Horsfall, Muthulakshmi, Happell & Hunt, 2013).

Another short-term goal is to ensure to offer the best patient care to those in need of it regardless of the challenges like shortage of hospital supplies, poor hospital conditions and encounter with poor patients that are unable to cater for their hospital bills. Saving as many lives as possible is always the main aim of a nurse, which helps doctors in their careers as well. Quality treatment is always manageable regardless of the state of the working environment (Cleary et al., 2013).

Lastly, promoting a safe hospital surrounding is a daily goal for nurses. It includes regular cleaning of the health facilities, sterilizing every area that people come in contact with to keep the place free from germs and bacteria. Such precautions prevent further harm to the patient and the health people within the facility (Cleary et al., 2013).

Long-Term Goals

Acquiring a Masters' degree in Nursing. It will equip the nurse with more information and skills that help the nurse individually and the large community. MSN comes with more understanding, responsibilities, opportunities and better pay. It gives a nurse a chance to pursue their specific interests, as well as serve people in more extended and better ways (Cleary et al., 2013).

Attain a more professional understanding of nursing. The daily experiences in nursing add new ideas and skills on the best ways to perform duties as a nurse. More knowledge is gained through the further study on the areas of interest in the nursing field. More diseases emerge every day, and hence nurses have to keep updating themselves with every sickness. It's a goal that comes true with every little addition of useful learning in nursing (Cleary et al., 2013).

Joining the big and successful nursing organization established around the globe is another long-term goal. It comes around through educational efforts, experience and attending several nursing seminars. It also sets the way for getting that nursing position one desires. Having an MSN degree equips a nurse with leadership skills, strategies, and knowledge that can guide a nurse to achieve their goals in a shorter time as opposed to nurses without it (Cleary et al., 2013).

In conclusion, nurses play a vital role in the community. The field is growing so fast with more people undertaking the course. Achievement of their goals and playing of their role will undoubtedly help achieve better health care around the globe.
