Following directions entails accessing a particular point or area according to an expert's instructions. Also, it encompasses performing specific tasks and assignments as per the directives of an expert. For instance, a teacher may guide a learner on how to draw a pattern by giving general directions to be followed by the latter. Similarly, a foreigner in a new country may need guidance to guide them in touring various regions. In both scenarios, one must carefully follow the direction presented by an expert to ensure that he accesses the desired area. Thus, the following course is a skill that requires some necessary skills and knowledge to do things as per the instructions (Berlin 177). The skills are essential since one must be able to observe the directions competently to complete a particular task or reach a specific destination. The skills are paramount for every learner since, without them, they cannot complete their missions successfully. Lack of expertise leads to frustrations since the directions and instructions will tend to be quite challenging due to poor interpretation.
Therefore, everyone should be clear on the steps necessary for sufficient following of directions. For the effective following of instructions, the learner should listen carefully to the instructions. Explaining the instructions is a complex concept that requires a comprehensive understanding of every statement (Berlin 176). All the words that the director uses in giving instructions are necessary to the learners. So, they should not miss any explanation to be able to connect the instructions procedurally. Besides, the attentiveness is paramount in comprehending and remembering all the instructions during the actual performance of the task when the learner will be required to undertake the task independently.
The learners also require remaining inquisitive during the instruction giving session. Anything that sounds complex or unclear should be adequately comprehended. Thus, it is necessary to keep asking questions and clarifications since to avoid frustrations that may follow during the final hour when the learner is expected to undertake the tasks alone. The interpretations are also paramount since after giving the instructions, the learners are always left to make the tasks alone without any further guidance, especially when it involves travelling. When someone seeks clarification of all complex concepts, it will be easier to undertake the assigned task alone without more frustrations. For instance, in a class where an instructor is giving learners instructions and directions on how to draw patterns, the learners who correctly understand the concepts are the curious ones in the learning session.
On the other hand, the learners should ask for help from the instructors before the actual tasks. If it involves directions, they need to seek clarifications regarding the landmarks and standard physical features along the roads. Similarly, if they entail performing specific tasks, the learners need to try following the instructions given by their teachers to ascertain whether they can complete the tasks alone. They will then identify the areas of confusion and make further clarifications so that they can effectively perform the tasks alone in the instructor's absence. The learners who always try to assess their abilities to follow instructions and directions in the presence of their instructors have higher chances of developing directions effectively and achieve their purposes.
The learners should recite the directives for better memorability when the instructors leave them alone to undertake the tasks. The process may entail repeating the instructions to oneself or a fellow learner so that they can remember the instructions. The learners who memorize the directives have higher chances of following the instructions and doing the right things since they clearly remember what the instructor explains. The memorability is a complex skill that every learner should acquire since the whole craft of the following direction depends on one's ability to memorize. According to Berlin (176), the learners who always master the tools that the teacher use in drawing a particular pattern still emerge the best in drawing the models. Also, they can explain to their fellow learners the concepts given by their instructors. Thus, the skill of memorability remains the most useful in following directions in any learning or instructional session.
On balance, the process of the following direction is a procedural concept that entails the coordination of different skills to follow effectively. Every instructional session requires a learner to be active throughout the course, giving session to be able to understand them. The difference that people sometimes experience in the process of following directions results from the fact that some learners do not keenly take the steps into account as given by the instructor. The wrong following of instructions often leads to landing on undesired locations or getting into unplanned troubles. The learners should, therefore, take into account the landmarks given in the process of explanation and also understand the compass direction effectively. On the other hand, when it involves giving instructions on how particular handle tasks, the learners should adequately engage the skill of memorizing to understand the instructions in a manner that they can use them in future.
