Introduction
Recruitment of the high school-age athletes follows specific criteria based on their reputation in the athletic activities as well as academic performance. On an annual basis, the high schools together with the colleges reserve some slots to accommodate some of the students who have a stable athletic record, and in exchange the student's talent can serve as an advantage to the institution. Some of the factors that contribute to the recruiting of the high school-age athletes include:
- Promoting physical development among student-athletes as they learn about exercise, stamina, learning health, fitness, and nutrition consequently leading to self-confidence as well as building and developing their aspiration.
- Promoting the education level among student, since the participant in the educational athletics are privileged to attain higher GPA's and at the same time increases the school attendance rates, college acceptance as well as graduation.
- Enables the athletes to gain the values of healthy competition, goal setting, goal and hard work. The participants will eventually have enhanced the educational experience as they strive to be the best not only as the students but also as, members of the community, teammates, and students.
- Offering opportunity to the talented students who come from deprived family to get the opportunity to access quality education while at the same time practicing their talents.
Should There Be Rules to Govern the Recruiting Of High School-Age Athletes
According to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the annual number of recruitment done by the college coaches should be fewer than 7 percent. Some athletes are privileged to get admission to the well-known school with large sports programs. They succeed in the interest and have the better opportunity of excelling in professional sports. The rest get admitted into the small school; therefore they get less recognized but might be equally talented as the ones who go to the big institutions. There is need to have the regulation that will govern the recruiting process of high school-age athletes so that some institutions to instill fair completion in athletic competition and promote education quality.
Having rules over the recruiting of high school-age athletes will have the following advantages:
- The students' attention towards their academic activities will not be interrupted since they will not be bombarded with many calls and invitation and calls from coaches, which can interrupt their studies.
- The regulations will counter the recruitment of the student's whose age is not considered for the school-age athletes. Some students fake their age so that they can be considered as the college student and yet there are older, hence making unfair competitions over their opponent institutions during the games.
- Some institution focuses more on recruiting the school-age athletes rather than bearing in mind their academic qualification to join the institutions; therefore it will be advantageous for the regulation to give specific GPA as the requirement for the students to get recruited. That way it will govern the quality of education among the institutions.
- Some institutions go the extent of recruiting students from the foreign countries; the regulation has to foresee whether the recruit met the regulations stated by the federal government on immigration as well as the regulations enacted by "United States Department of Education."
- Indeed having the required regulation, will promote fair completion during games among the students' games and at the same time uphold the quality of education, since both sports and academic are important for the welfare of the student as well as that of the school.
