Business publications are among the most important secondary sources of information that give the greatest insights into the current state of the economic affairs touching on every aspect of the economy. These include journals and business pamphlets as well as other electronic media produced and distributed regularly. These publications touch on several issues and wide-ranging fields of business that are important not only in understanding the existing business environment but also useful in predicting the conditions in the future. This is of the essence since the business industry has long been known to be highly dynamic. As such, companies and other individual stakeholders involved in this industry always need to keep informed on the trends as they come and go to make sustainable policies and business decisions. In the exercise, the researcher took a sample of such business publications from the Harvard Business Review, identifying some of the most recent events and occurrences in the business world.
An example of the current topics identified from the publication is the September 12th 2019 Article written by Daniel Dobrygowski, touching on cybercrime. Cybercrime is no doubt one of the biggest problems in the business environment especially during the past decade due to the increased uptake as well as changes in the technology. In the article, the author first begins by elaborating on the challenges the government faces when it comes to digital technology and the regulation of the cyber world. The author then goes on to present the precarious position companies and business individuals have found themselves in due to the laxity of governments to combat cybersecurity issues effectively, exposing the stakeholders to numerous risks in their daily activities. As a result of this lack of coordination, companies, and individuals have been forced to look for ways to tackle the problem themselves as they are the ones that stand to lose the most if not tackled with the required urgency (Dobrygowski, 2019).
Some of the mitigation measures that companies and business stakeholders have been designed to combat the cybersecurity issues affecting them include building alliances so as to share the responsibility of tackling the menace. Some of these collaborations include operative alliances built around small groups of companies that share intelligence and as well as come up with solutions to emerging threats cumulatively. Others include normative alliances comprised of larger companies and which to tend to gravitate for increased government involvement in combating cybersecurity. However, as explained in the article, much as the two employ different strategies to combat the menace, they all are united in raising cybersecurity awareness the world over rather than focusing on a smaller sphere alone. Coordinating these efforts among agencies at the global level makes it easier to keep up with the high dynamism in technological advances that allow cybercrime to foster. However, this strategy has also proved to be challenging due to isolation by some global players who make it harder to address emerging issues with adequate urgency (Dobrygowski, 2019).
One of the main topics encountered in the article is the lack of corporation by the government and the other business stakeholders, which has allowed for cyber-insecurity to rise to alarming levels especially in the wake of the second decade. As a result of ineffective policies by the government when it comes to combating cybercrime, the digital space has become a haven for cybercriminals eager to exploit every loophole available for malicious purposes. Secondly, the laxity by the government to address the issue of cybersecurity with the required seriousness exposes companies and individual businesses to enormous risks as they are the most vulnerable to cyberattacks. With the situation getting dire with each passing day given the dynamic nature of the digital space, companies have thus been forced to look for ways to combat the problem using their own means.
Also, the need for cooperation between countries to create a safe and harmonious global business environment has been brought forward in the discussion. This goal is achievable through the formulation of policies favouring a sustainable global business community. Unity thus is the key to combating threats such as cyberterrorism and other cyber-crimes as they affect everyone as opposed to being limited to a central region. Promoting unity between nations in combating these global threats would thus create a business environment that is safe for everyone regardless of their location. On the other hand, adopting non-business friendly policies such as geolocation isolation could easily give room for increased cyber insecurity and other threats posing a big challenge to companies and individuals involved in businesses all over the world.
With the rapid developments in technology as has been witnessed in the recent past, it has become increasingly difficult to deal with global threats that bear potentially immeasurable economic damages. As such, we all need to come together now more than ever and give cumulative efforts to effectively address such emerging threats as cybersecurity in a timely manner.
