My Reflections on each specific observation:
It is 7 a.m., and my family members just woke up to prepare for the day. There are five people in the household. My father, mother, my two younger siblings, and I. All the lights in the house are on. Sanitizers are on the top of the living room shelf. The curtains are shut. The weather is a bit chilly outside. My mother is in the kitchen preparing breakfast. My father is sitting in the living room watching news headlines on CNN about the pandemic and how it has affected countries globally. The volume of the TV is up. My siblings are in the living room, too, listening to the news and browsing on their phones on Facebook. Dad tells Mum, who is in the kitchen, “The numbers of COVID-19 are still rising all over the world, I am worried that things might not get back to normal.” My mother replies, “Yes, it is worrisome.” I was standing next to the kitchen, and I asked my mother, “What is going to happen if they never find a cure for the virus.” She replied, they better find it soon because staying in the house all day is boring.” I noticed that, unlike before, no one is in a hurry to leave the house because of the pandemic restrictions. When watching the news, it appeared that everyone was worried. On the one hand, my siblings, for example, never uttered a word when watching the news while holding their phones. I think it is because of their tender age and they do not grasp what is happening in the world. My parents, on the other hand, were worried about the situation.
It is 9 a.m. Everyone has had breakfast. My younger siblings are in their respective rooms. My parents and I are in the living room. The television is still on. My father is switching the channels between CNN and Aljazeera. I notice that both channels are reporting on the pandemic and how it has affected countries globally. I notice that my parents are silent as they are watching the news. Outside, the neighborhood is calm. Noise from children playing outside and cars moving in and out of their dive ways was non-existent. After a long silence and people watching the news, I decided to ask my parents how the pandemic has changed their lives. My father replied that there are no jobs as he is no longer getting jobs as a private contractor because his clients say there is no money. Also, my mother mentioned that the American economy would soon dwindle if scientists did not work on finding a cure soon. All this while we are sitting in the living room, I am just worried about how the world is going to be if the pandemic continues to exist in the world. The news presenter on CNN was reporting on the way many deaths have been reported in Italy, compromising the elderly population. At the same time, I am worried for my siblings, who seem not to be aware of the fear and anxiety the pandemic is causing people. When my parents were talking, I sensed apprehension and uneasiness in their voices. since the pandemic, all my parents, siblings, and I have been in the house almost all day because of the restrictions. I noticed that the restrictions bothered my father because he was unable to find more work like he used to before the pandemic.
It is 11 a.m., and I am sitting on my porch while on my phone. The street is empty. All the cars are parked in front of people’s houses. Unlike before, no children playing in the streets. There is a bit of sun rising from the east side. The ambiance is a bit calm. After about thirty minutes, my next-door neighbor, who is Asian, drives through to their house. They stay in the car for a while, and as the windows are rolled down, I notice that they are rubbing their hands, which makes me believe that they are applying sanitizers. They have their masks still on while sitting in the car. After about two minutes, they leave the car and begin removing groceries from the back of the car. They say a quick hello and enter the house. I believed that due to the calm ambiance, neighbors were in the house watching the news. When the couple arrived in the neighborhood, I noticed that they were protecting themselves from contracting the virus. They had face masks on and sanitizer in their car. Before leaving the car, they ensured that they applied it to remove germs from their hands and avoid transfer to the grocery bag. From their cautiousness, I assumed that they did the same thing before leaving the grocery store. Before, while sitting on the porch, I would notice that the couple would just leave their car and walk into the house. The pandemic has indeed changed their lives and made them more cautious.
It is 6 p.m., and I decide to go and take out the trash. After doing that, I sit on the porch to observe what happens during that time because most of the people who go to work are now returning home. The street is still quiet. The sun is now setting. It is a bit cold, and I am wearing my woolen brown sweater. After a while, two cars belonging to my neighbors pull up. They see me sitting on the porch; they roll down their window and say hello as they head to their houses. On a normal day, when they pull up to their house, their children always run outside for a hug. As I observed, the two cars pulled up, parked in front of their houses, walked out, and just went into their houses. In the first car, I noticed that when the man walked out, he was not wearing a face mask. In the second car, the lady and man were not wearing masks as well. As it was approaching 6:30 p.m., the watchman always walked around to see if anything was left in the driveways and whether the cars in the neighborhood were properly parked. As he was passing by my house, we exchanged pleasantries. I then asked him how the pandemic had changed his life. He stated that nowadays, the neighborhood is calm because children are not playing outside. He also mentioned that none of the residents want to shake hands because of the fear of contracting the virus. The pandemic has changed my life considerably. The entire day, I noticed that everyone’s routine was the same. No children were playing outside, probably because their parents did not want them to mingle because of fear of the virus. Also, it seemed that some of the residents were wearing face masks while others were not doing that. From a personal perspective, it appeared like some people were taking extra precautions to avoid contracting the virus while others were living their lives as they did before the pandemic.
