The people from Transylvania, Romania, are depicted as primitive men who use instincts to survive; they live in groups to defend their territory. In the story, fathers are hunters, and the role of the female is to give birth and rear kids. During courting, males compete for females. Dracula has three women who protect him who feasted on human blood, which is a primitive culture. “I seemed somehow to know her face and to know it in connection with some dreamy fear." “I felt in my heart a wicked, burning desire that they would kiss me with those red lips." ( p. 46) The men in Romania are depicted as hostile and fight anyone who threatened the life of their ladies present country, And Dracula is a part of this tradition: “We Szekelys have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights, for lordship” (Chapter 3, p. 38) In the civilized world; however, men ate at designated times and in a sophisticated manner. On the contrary, to civilization, the train Jonathan is waiting for arrives an hour late. " ..but train was an hour late”.( Stocker 3)
The nature in the novel contains forests and mountains, which gives the audience the feeling of fear for the unknown. The village is primitive and has pictures looking in habitats. “I shall never forget the last glimpse I had of the inn-yard and its crowd of picturesque figures, all crossing themselves, as they stood around the archway, with its background of rich foliage of oleander and orange trees in green tubs clustered in the center of the yard". (p. 16) Darkness is another sign of Gothic motive. There is thunder and lightning and storm sand also, Dracula's horses that pursue Jonathan are black, not forgetting the wolfs. The Architecture of the Castle is Gothic, The architecture of the castle is also Gothic; “a vast ruined castle, from whose tall black windows came no ray of light, and whose broken battlements showed a jagged line against the moonlit sky." ( p. 23).In the castle, three female vampires try to attack Jonathan. Gothic motifs involve suspense in writing, the novel.
According to the vivid description of Dracula, it resembles the Jewish race, and that is why the Victorians, in particular, head of the charity was Dracula. Anyone who was contaminated by his blood would be killed, for instance, Lucy. The story explores the horror over cultural and racial contamination in the Victorian era. The Victorian race depicted itself as superior to other races, and no crossbreeding was allowed as this would bring forth and inferior offspring. Dracula is sexually attracted to Lucy, and that is why Lucy sleepwalks. Dracula is said to be having intercourse with her that contaminating her blood with that of his culture, against the Victorian belief. In the end, Lucy is killed in a weird, sexually committed violence as a way of eliminating Dracula's blood from the Victorian generation.
Conclusion
Lucy was losing blood, first because of Dracula as the vampire was sucking her blood when she was asleep, and therefore needed a transfusion which three men offer to help. Thus, the surface meaning of blood is the normal fluid in the human body. However, literary, the extract brings out blood as a powerful tool that men use to control women, as seen with the transfusion of blood between Dracula and Lucy, which makes her unable to control her sexual desires. Blood also means their patriarchal system that has control over women, as seen when only men take part in donating blood to Lucy, which was a way to control her.
