Why Might Maya Be at Greater Risk of Type 2 Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism. "In Type 2 diabetes, the cells in the body do not respond to insulin" (Hu et al., 2003). The buildup of body fat brings about higher levels of insulin in the bloodstream in both sexes because, moderately, being obese begets insulin resistance in body tissue. Studies have conveyed that central adiposity (accumulation of body fat in the waistline) increases insulin resistance and hence results in the elevated hyperinsulinemia (Hu et al., 2003). Bioactive proteins (adipokines) and free fatty acids released by adipose tissue affect insulin action.

What Are Som e Small Steps That Maya Could Take to Begin Minimizing Her Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes?

Reduce the intake of fast foods in the vending machine.

Instead of taking a 45 minutes break while taking lunch, Maya should take 20 minutes, and the remaining 25 minutes, she could take a walk. This will help burn calories.

Instead of bringing his car to work every day as there is free parking, he could choose to walk or take a bus instead. Taking a bus will encourage Maya to walk from the bus stop to her office. Sedentary behavior minimization.

Besides the BMI And Lab Results, What Other Information Would Be Useful for Maya To Understand Her Health Risk?

All adults that have a BMI 25kg/m2 or lower in high-risk ethnic groups, as well as additional risk factors, should be tested for Type 2 diabetes. Some of the health risk factors include; deficient physical activity, first-degree relative diagnosed with diabetes, women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus or macrocosmic baby, high-risk ethnic group, a blood pressure >140/90 or treated hypertension, women with polycystic ovary syndrome, other medical conditions correlated with insulin resistance (such as; acanthosis nigricans) and has had a history of any cardiovascular disease (Colditz et al., 1990).

Consider How You Would Coach Maya If She Were A New Client of Yours

The key aims in the coaching process are to reduce associated health risks and restore or maintain quality of life. Obesity is a therapeutic disorder in which surplus body fat builds up to the level that it causes adverse paraphernalia on health, reducing life anticipation, and growing health risks. Obesity results from the encouraging energy balance that develops when energy consumption surpasses energy expenses. Health risk factors can be reduced by a variety of interventions that include weight reduction through diet and exercise (Colditz et al., 1990). Lifestyle and environmental factors are associated with the pathogenesis of obesity. Therefore, while coaching Maya, I shall focus on these factors.

These factors include; excessive energy intake, immoderate fat intake, and deficient physical activity. I will counsel Maya on eating a modified diet that contains low fat and few calories. She should consume less than 10 percent of calories from fat. Reduction of high amounts of refined carbohydrates. Promote consumption of monosaturated fats, like those in olive oil over saturated fat, like that in butter. I would also encourage Maya to do 150 minutes of exercise each week and change their eating behavior. To lose 7 percent of her body weight and keep the weight off.
