The joint commission for the accreditation of health facilities was set up over seven decades ago with the mandate of improving public health. The commission works closely with other stakeholders to evaluate healthcare facilities and inspire them to excel in the provision of effective and safe care with excellent value and quality. Every facility has varying requirements for it to be accredited by the commission. The commission has requirements that must be attained by the facilities for them to be accredited.
Organizations that seek home care accreditation by the Joint Commission are required to meet several requirements. All facilities must be owned by the United States citizens, and all the operations must be within the country. The facilities must be registered under all registration regulations and attain the set minimum requirements, such as the flow of patients that are served within a given time period. Requirements for eligibility are different, and the results are based on the services that are provided and the survey options that are selected.
The process of decision making and scoring depends on the criticality of the set standards and other requirements in relation to the safety and quality of patient care. The Joint Commission has the mandate to ensure that the accreditation and the standards of compliance to scoring are a true reflection of the performance of the organization with respect to the standards of the Joint Commission and other elements of a performance.
The healthcare facilities must have a proven track record of transparency where all process components are open to scrutiny. The facility must be easily understood by the partners and other certified organizations because they have varying standards. The standards vary on how they affect health facilities based on their criticality and how directly they affect the patients. The standards are set and observed to ensure that all facilities up for accreditation provide quality service and remain outstanding in the field of healthcare.
The Home Care Accreditation program targets facilities that provide care at the residence of the patient or community-based healthcare services such as pharmacies. Several settings are observed that include Home Health, Hospice, personal care, and pharmacies. The recent analysis indicates that home healthcare providers are earmarked for accreditation because they have attained a 5-star quality rating that has made them the first choice for hospitals, payors, health systems, and physicians. Hospices are critical and have shown great commitment to excellent end-of-life care, while pharmacies ensure improvements that are sustainable for patient safety, operational reliability, and quality.
There are several healthcare programs that are accredited by the commission that include ambulatory are accreditation, Behavioral healthcare accreditation, critical access hospital accreditation, Homecare accreditation, hospital accreditation, Laboratory services accreditation, and nursing care center accreditation as well as office-based surgery accreditation.
Conclusion
Certification and accreditation are key accomplishments to attain as they stamp the legality and allows room for operation without doubts. Home and community-based healthcare providers play a crucial role in the patient lives, and the residents as well as the community. To attain accreditation, the homecare facility must be eligible and adhere to the accreditation options such as pricing. After attaining accreditation, the homecare facility is required to ensure quality service delivery and timely delivery to sustain the accreditation. Accreditation is not the end goal, and therefore, the facility needs to go beyond accreditation by providing high-quality tools, services, and solutions to help keep a safe journey after attaining accreditation.
