Introduction
Technology is the use of the knowledge of science for practical activities, especially in industry. For example, in a sentence, 'Going Green technology involves the use of renewable energy sources like; solar and wind energy.' The scientific knowledge here is devising methods to tap into solar and wind. Computer networks are interconnections between computing devices by cables or radio signals, which enables them to receive and send data. A common word for this system is the 'Internet of Things' (IoT) (Khan & Salah, 2018). This paper aims to answer some questions regarding computer technology and networks.
What the Tutorials Teach
The main theme of the tutorials is; Networks. Types of networks, their scope/size (from PAN (Personal Area Network) to WAN (Wide Area Network), e.g., the Internet, the different types of configuration (Typology) of computing devices, e.g., client-server, star, bus, ring, mesh, hybrid(star-bus, star-ring) typologies. The tutor also talks about storage devices and Big Data matters, e.g., hard drives, flash disks, servers with different capabilities from kilobytes(kb) to Petabytes(Pb), i.e., 1 trillion kilobytes. (Newman, 2019).
Network and data security were also highlighted with the mention of; firewalls (host-based, stateful vs. stateless), content filters (for E-mails), Encryption, IP addresses, Anti Viruses, and use of passwords and how they work. They also show how the Internet works, e.g., serial to parallel data conversion between computers and the Internet, IP (Internet Protocol) address, NICs (network interface cards), etc. Internet speed evolution and the technologies behind them are also discussed, e.g., 2G to 3G to 4G to 4G LTE to 5G. (Li & Zhao, 2018).
Quality of work done by tutorials
The tutorials are an excellent learning tool, especially with the lock-downs in many countries following the outbreak of the Corona (COVID-19) pandemic. Learning material is brief but, at the same time, relevant. The use of diagrams makes the concepts easier to understand. The tutors have done a commendable job at teaching these by employing tonal variation, pregnant pauses, and using clear language. If this were a 5-star review, the quality of the tutorials would be a 4.5 star. A major advantage of the tutorials is that they are available online at any time. They are also convenient as a learner can pause, reflect on concepts captured so far then move on with the video at a comfortable pace.
To whom the tutorial may be useful/relevant
The tutorial is relevant to anyone who wants to improve their computer knowledge and for learners and professionals in Information Technology. It may also be helpful for businesses that want to leverage the Internet resources and make something out of it. Especially by the fact that the New Technology industry will be among the top three most profitable ventures in the coming years. Information on computer technology will become such a valuable skill as the world gradually goes digital. (Baskerville, 2018).
How to safeguard a home network
Online spaces are not as safe as one might think. There are hackers, malware (viruses, Trojan horses, worms, etc.), cybercrime (online fraud, blackmail, and defamation), terrorism, and (Adult content) pornography, to mention a few. The Internet itself is described as a minefield. (Johnson & Smolla, 2019). If a network is left open to unauthorized access, the consequences can be devastating.
Ways to safeguard a home network include; use of passwords and encryption ( to prevent access by unauthorized persons), use of filtered applications, e.g., Google in 2015, developed YouTube Kids, to ensure that minors are not exposed to inappropriate content on YouTube. (Alghowinem, 2018). One can also install; firewalls and Anti-viruses to combat hackers and harmful software, respectively.
Conclusion
The world is becoming a digital place, a global village made possible by the development of computers and online technologies. It would be a risk to stay ignorant of where the world is headed, in fields of science and technology as they will shape the future. 'Information is power.' The future education system (online) to come is estimated at $350 billion. It is an opportunity for people to get educated in this field to succeed in professional and financial status. Just Like, Andrew Carnegie, a 19th Century billionaire saw that demand for steel would increase in the future and invested in steel milling and supply. It is no surprise his business made him among the richest people in history. (Bostaph, 2017).
