Introduction

Since childhood, I have always aspired to impact lives through my service provision as a nurse positively. As a nurse, I would commit to transforming the patients' lives by embracing and integrating positive energy, which is essential to facilitate the level of care and service delivery. To actualize my dream, I pursued nursing in college, a course that has instilled skills and knowledge on how to deal and interact with patients while offering sound and competent kind of care. In this course, I have learned that healing is a process that not only depends on the effectiveness of the diagnosis and treatment processes but also the consideration of other factors such as the patients’ social, cultural, and religious aspects.

Typically, consideration of the patients’ social, cultural, and religious factors facilitates their diagnosis, treatment, and healing processes, particularly because such aspects, avail more information about the patient, thus understanding their conditions while structuring the diagnosis and treatment processes accordingly (Nursing Theory, n.d.). In other terms, as a nurse, I have learned that the effectiveness of nursing lies in the customization of services based on the diverse patients’ needs. Besides, a nurse should alter the patients’ environment to develop the optimal condition for their bodies to heal (Nursing Theory, n.d.). In this case, the environmental factors to consider include food, water, fresh air, and the patients’ cleanliness. In some cases, the environment would also mean a specific diet, while in other cases, it would also mean minimal noise.

Learning moments or activities from this course: Evidence Based Inquiry for Scholarship and Practice

Reflecting upon this course, I should say that it has been important, considering its influence in fulfilling my dreams and expectations while serving as an ideal source of valuable information, skills, and experience. As a specialist, therefore, I am equipped with a robust knowledge base that is critical to the execution of service by being a productive worker (Chrisman et al., 2014). Through the course and as an expert, I have learned that I cannot solely depend on intuition, methods, and outlawed information that was initially used in the previous decades. As a specialist, it is important to collect new information since it would facilitate in the decision making processes, thus understanding the existing nursing trends (Chrisman et al., 2014). Evidence-based practice and particularly in nursing is a fundamental pillar in modern health care practice chiefly because it encourages the adoption and implementation of the relevant and current issues affecting the diverse pool of patients while structuring and adjusting the caregiving process in a manner that complements the diverse patients’ needs (EIUO, 2018).

Essentially, through evidence-based nursing, medical practitioners become part of the research process, thus contributing to the generation of new information and knowledge. Also, through evidence-based nursing, I learned that as a medical practitioner, I should be the difference that makes the difference in the diagnosis, treatment, and caregiving processes. Besides, I learned that caregiving is subject to the practitioners' thoughts, feelings, and attitude. With the right feelings and attitude, practitioners through caregiving positively influence the patients' outcome and satisfaction (Redlands Community Hospital, n.d.). Overall, the nursing course has held a central role in enhancing my understanding of the various approaches of handling and dealing with the diverse patients’ needs while cultivating my caring and caregiving through an active and authentic presence and intentionality (Redlands Community Hospital, n.d.). As such, I can develop an accommodative environment that aids in optimizing the patients’ ability to heal from within.

Thoughts on Evidence-Based Practice

According to Jean Watson’s theories and ideologies, humans cannot be treated or handled as objects or separated from self, nature, and the larger workforce. Therefore, a holistic nurse should place more emphasis on the interpersonal processes between them and the patient to establish a sound and effective treatment process. To develop a sound treatment process, a holistic nurse should embrace an evidence-based practice, which in this case is acknowledged as the process of collecting, processing, and implementing research findings to improve clinical practices purposely (Stevens, 2013). I think that evidence-based practice is an important aspect in nursing and the health care sector as a whole, considering its influence in improving the patient outcome and satisfaction while reducing the cost and demand of healthcare resources (Foss-Durant, 2014). For instance, through evidence-based practice in the health care setting, a medical facility stands a chance to reduce its expenses primarily by eliminating outdated procedures and techniques that lead to the purchase of obsolete equipment (EIUO, 2018). Overall, evidence-based practice is essential in nursing practice since it facilitates the process of gathering, analyzing, and applying evidences, thus positively improving health care practices and patient outcome and satisfaction.

Evidence Supporting Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring

As stated earlier, Watson’s theory of human caring states that human should not be handled or treated like objects and should not be separated from self, other, nature, and the larger workforce. Watson's theory emphasizes the collection of the appropriate information since it's critical to developing and structuring the diagnosis and treatment process in a manner that facilitates the interpersonal relationship between the caregiver and the care receiver, the patient (Foss-Durant, 2014). Also, Watson’s theory of human caring is tailored to the centrality of human caring and the development of relationships that not only promotes the patients’ healing but also for the caregivers’ potential healing (Fawcett, 2018). In other words, Watson’s theory of human caring promotes the embracement of altruistic values and practices, trust, and inspires faith and hope for others.
